Is it me or do hell of a lot of ppl have problem with hoof problems this year!! I've gotta 25 year old mare who has never had a problem til this year and she now has 2 cracked hooves.......losing battle with all the rain i spose. How long to fix do you all reckon? 12 months to heal properly??

Last year was a very bad year, but i think that maybe this year has been even worse. All down to our wonderful weather of course

Unless the cracks reach the coronary band, I reckon it should be a bit less than twelve months, but depends on how fast her hooves grow.

No the worst is cracked just under half way. She's only 12.2 and likes to live out. I bring her in every other day for about 4 hours, let her feet dry, hibiscrub them, spray with iodine, pack with stockholm tar and throw her back out......seems to be ok,
Reckon I'm doing the right thing? She's on no hard feed and to be honest they cracked up when she was, and she was havin biotin!!

Is there any sign of any infection? If not, I would cut out the hibiscrubbing and just spray with iodine.

Where is TheFarrier when you need him eh?

She went slightly foot sore on one of them a couple of weeks ago but is fine now, just wanted to thoroughly clean it as paddocks are getting very muddy at the mo due to the rain!! Would you plug with cotton wool AND tar or no??
