Many West Country folk will be sad to learn that Thelma Baker died early yesterday after a long illness.

Thelma was for many years a stalwart of the Culmstock Hunt & had been its Secretary, since 1981 & a Joint Master since the death of Norman Bartlett in November 2006. For many seasons she had arranged the meet card, the last of which she sent out as recently as 16th April.

Followers of the Culmstock will miss, not only her cheerful & encouraging &, at times, forceful presence & leadership at Culmstock meets & social events which continued, outwardly undiminished, despite many years of ill health, but also the sheer amount of effort she continued to put into the Hunt’s affairs right up to the end.

Some of us have expressed doubts over whether Thelma is replaceable & that may well have been a factor which conspired to ensure that she died not only in office, but in harness.

Our thoughts are with her husband, Robin, at this time.
