Having seen so many posts about horses and ponies not being brain dead and doing what a horse and pony does when they try and tell their owners or loaners, I found an 1988 book of Thelwells that I'd bought and it had me fits of laughter as nothing has really changed.

I agree, I think those cartoons are so spot on about ponies and their behaviour. And like you they make me laugh still like I did when I was younger (I'm now in my 40s). He was a genius and I reckon had watched ponies for a long time to be able to sum up all that attitude and expression and humour in a cartoon.

For me there's a modern day equivalent in Jude Too with her range of horse and dog cards - she's got them to a tee too!

I got that book when I was about 10, I still read through it often! In fact, the three pictures about jumping (take-off too early, take-off too late, take-off just right) I have photocopied and put in frames on my wall - the final picture is exactly how me and Scooby tackle jumps!

My yard owner reminded me of Thelwell earlier when she exclaimed that she couldn't do ridden showing as 'no-one wants to see a fifty something curvy lady with boobs and bum bouncing about' (she looks fine to me) but it just conjured up images of little fat thelwell ponies with voluptuous ladies astride!
