Anyone else got strangles near them?

We all know Patchetts has a mild case as Anna was good enough to post about this, but I have been told there is a yard close to a competition centre near Lutterworth that also has it as well as another yard somewhere near Wellingborough? There was also talk on here that a large yard/riding school near Northampton also has it???

Anyone got it at their yard or know of any cases close to them?

.

Strangles is always around at certain times of the year - just one of those things. You hope that people are responsible enough to make changes so that the spread of it is kept to a minimum but some people don't do this, often inadvertantly because of the nature of this condition.

I do agree with you, and I am sure if people didn't get so freaked out by it then more people would tell. Sadly the moment anyone mentions the word lots of people become incredibly melodramatic, not saying that this isn't a concerning condition or anything, just that the recovery rate is HUGE so not sure why the crazy panic. I can only put it down to ignorance - that's the only thing which makes any sense to me.

How infectious/contagious is it? Does anyone know? It is such a horrid desease horse owners are afraid to move if there is a yard near them affected. I just wonder what the likihood of spread is in reality.

There is a confirmed case at a riding school near Wellingborough we have heard and we heard tonight another suspected case in Grendon also near Wellingborough. We are based near by but all clear at yard but until more is known the yard on shut down no hacking. Luckily we got loads of private fileds, woods and jumping paddoack as well as indoor and outdoor school so we can still get about a bit until things become more clear or no more cases develop. Its horrible knowing its so close

In answer to Turbobert..... Its very contagious.... spreads like wildfire! But contrary to belief it is not airbourne, however it can be caught from water troughs (say at showgrounds) It is more one on one contact......

A nasty disease...... thankfully we have nothing in our immediate area, however the YO has asked that we do not attend a few competitions that are in close porximity to the disease!

We have been in touch with our vet as are close by to the confirmed case. Its in Bozeat, the riding school is called Glebe farm.

Hmmmm two of mine were very poorly, one had a day of snot and the fourth nothing at all. It was the secondary infection which got our old pony, and our youngest got a huge sublingual abscess which took two weeks to burst. However, it was the pony which gave it to my girl that died from the direct consequences.

I have heard but not first hand, that the riding school has not shut down since the case was confirmed but as I say this is not first hand information so I do not know if its correct or not. I hope its wrong. Could ring them I guess ask for a lesson see what response I get?

Hello everyone, i can confirm that Glebe Farm Equestrian centre in Bozeat, wellingborough has got 2 confirmed cases of strangles. The yard has been closed and will remain closed until both cases have cleared up. Two of our livery horses ( horses that compeate a lot) are the confirmed. We have managed to keep it away from our other 45 horses and are at the momnet coming up to the date when we can have the test to check that it has gone. Fingers xxxx it has.

thanks for up date. we were told that the vets dealing with your case confirmed you only had one case and it had only ever been one as of this Friday gone and three suspect cases which turned out to be clear. I hope the horses are ok poor things and will recover totally. Do you work with Heather then?

I've heard that 2 yards in Lavendon, Bucks also have the disease, although I don't think that's it's been officially confirmed, so may just be rumours, but if anyone hears anything, please let me know - The yard I keep my moose at is only a few miles away.
