Oh dear, he didn't get his way did he??

At least it's sleeping, just don't wake it!!

Not entirely, she's not all husky...
tongue.gif

I've been tiptoeing around all afternoon but she is well and truly zonked out!

Her name is Dax, she's just turned six months old and she is 1/2 Siberian Husky, 1/4 Alaskan Malamute and 1/4 German Shepherd (does this mean I can join the GSD mafia?
tongue.gif
)

She's been privately rehomed from a bloke who is having to move abroad for his job; the poor bloke was in tears as we took her, I felt terrible.
frown.gif
He's done a really good job with her so far, she's totally accident-free in the house, friendly with other dogs, children and even cats. She is really strong and pulls a fair bit on the lead but nothing that can't be sorted out once we're into a routine.

I am secretly really pleased, she's a daft old thing and I can't wait until she's settled in so we can start doing more fun things. I've already ordered a special adaptor wotsit and harness so she can come out with me on the bike.
smile.gif

Having just seen the other pictures on Facebook I have now come to the conclusion she is not actually real. You've bought a big stuffed dog haven't you?? No Husky/HuskyX stays still for that long!
What did you do to her? Trek the artic this morning??

Nah, if you poke it with your feet, it moves.
grin.gif

I know, I'm still waiting for the other shoe to drop and to come home to chewed furniture, dog turds everywhere and a manic husky x doing the cancan on my bed but nope...
blush.gif

She looks lovely, however that is a cross that could prove quite difficult. I would get her enrolled in a good training class, she will thoroughly enjoy it, there is a lot of brain in there that needs to be working.

As for the pulling on the lead - I think you may have trouble ever stopping that - they are bred to pull!!
grin.gif

[/ QUOTE ]

Don't remind me.
tongue.gif

I'm hoping we can eventually establish that lead = walk reasonably, harness + bike = PULL! OH has been looking into harness racing and I'd love to take her along to a meet to see if we can learn anything. Those one-dog scooter things look really fun.
grin.gif

She's booked in at the vet's next week for a microchip, I'll ask the nurses if they can recommend any particular trainer or group as I feel she will probably need a more breed-specific one - she bores easily with obedience training and just wants to run.

More specific to which breed
tongue.gif
They all want to run but obedience training is important, and once she has got the basics you can teach her more complicated stuff, which should keep her interested. Ii think you're very brave taking her with a bike, I used to do it with the shepherds (without the proper attachment I admit). had a very exciting time once when a rabbit crossed the road .
grin.gif

She is lovely! (Even if she has a boy's name
tongue.gif
)

You have a lot of strength and a headstrong nature on one side and a lot of brains on the other which is why I would stress anybody with these crosses invests a lot of time in exercise and training and wouldn't recommend them to everyone. Harness work and biking are an excellent idea.

All three of these breeds tend to go a bit Asbo at the 12mo mark so do be aware of this and put in the groundwork, although her previous owner seems to have reared her very well
smile.gif

With lead work, you need to invest a bit of time on focus training, so that looking at you and staying by your side equals praise, food, reward, ignoring you, pulling you, is reprimanded.

I would get a slip lead/collar or choke chain for normal walking, like you say, and harness means 'work'.

Our Mal doesn't pull on the lead- but to be honest she hasn't read the Malamute text book because she doesn't pull, doesn't howl, doesn't run off when off the lead, and when the pheasant flew out in her face this morning in the woods she didnt give chase! However, she was trained well and is an adult so I basically got a ready made dog- Yours is stunning- if you ever want a walking partner- Im only down the road!!

OH wanted to call her Dieffenbaker (

) so Dax was the closest reasonably unisex compromise.
tongue.gif
It's nice and easy to say, I like one-syllable names for training purposes. Isn't it the name for the German stock exchange?!

The previous owner has done a really good job - we encountered horses, sheep, pheasants, dogs and people on our evening walk and she didn't bat an eyelid except to pull a bit on the lead - a slip/choke lead is high on my list of priorities for this week to get that sorted. She's already learnt 'wait' for doorways, getting in and out of the car and so on (and she's an utter dream in the car, lies down quiet as a mouse!) so I'm confident she'll get the idea.
smile.gif

She's not food orientated at all which I'm finding odd, previous dogs I've worked with would turn themselves inside out for food and so I'm trying to find other ways to hold her attention. Smelly things seem to work well, even if she won't eat it she'll concentrate on some smelly tuna!

Strange creature.
tongue.gif
She's flaked out on the floor again, we were only out for an hour - have I found the only lazy husky in the entire world?

What does she go for, toys, fuss? If she isn't that bothered about food, don't feed her before training, feed her from your pockets instead of a bowl. My boy goes mad for tuna
smile.gif

Dax is a very big name for German dogs, along with Dux and Dex and Lux and Mutz and...
tongue.gif

I used to have a Dexy and a lovely girl she was too, the best!

She sounds like a total sweetie, wishing you all the best with her
laugh.gif

Dax - Drax you are only a letter away from a power station
smile.gif

My none food orientated dog will switch on with the squeak from a toy, we dare not use a toy itself though as he will not turn off from wanting to kill it.

What a beautiful dog! Is anyone else stunned by the cleanliness of the carpet? Maybe it's just me that has a muddy barnlike living room. Blew up another hoover this week

I give it another 24 hours before it's smothered, she is shedding copious amounts of long white hairs.

Many thanks to all, I think she is beautiful too.

Re: Dax hair goo, I knew I should've googled before I agreed on a name! Ah well, it's better than bloody Dieffenbaker.

I noticed the clean carpet too, that will all change

Can I stick my interfering hat on, I don't know about the husky/mal side but at 6 months old an hour would be a lot of exercise for a shep pup. At that age my shepherds would be having limited free running and only short lead walks, also I certainly wouldn't start biking her till at least 12 months, but again will stand corrected if it is okay for the other breeds in her.

Bahhhhh! I wouldn't do anything too hardcore with her until 1yo. Sheps can be a bit late to mature and any prolonged running and jumping will put a lot of wear and tear on growing bones and joints.

Don't worry, she's not doing anything at all strenuous yet! The hour was entirely on-lead just along the farm track and back at a walk. She isn't allowed to run free - I'd probably never see her again if I let her off.
blush.gif
Our yard is very small and she's not let out unsupervised so that's only a space for playing with us rather than hooning around.

In an effort to regulate wees and poos she's usually having about six very small walks spread throughough the day, just to the green or the dog poo bin and back. I'm not sure why I'm going to all the trouble as she seems to get by on one gigantic poo a day, which is proving mighily convenient.
grin.gif

Her previous owner did mention that he'd started biking his other dog (two year old pure husky) at about 18 months, although Dax had been walked in the harness already to introduce her to it.

It's easy to forget that she's still a puppy because of her size, although she's reminded me again this morning by wanting to sleep as soon as we got back. She slept all through the night again as well, very pleased.
smile.gif

That sounds perfect for her age.

Hmmm, do you ever get the feeling she is lulling you into a false sense of security?
Don't listen to me, I am just jealous and she sounds wonderful
tongue.gif
smile.gif

Gah, why can't they stay that age...not annoying baby puppy age but young enough to be all floppy and gorgeous and vulnerable and not a big feck-off adult that likes to bulldoze through life, ah, coming up to my two-year owniversary and getting all wistful!!!

I got my come-uppance yesterday when I left her for an hour to fetch the car from the garage - when I got back she'd peed on the kitchen floor and was totally beside herself with worry.
crazy.gif

So she's by no means entirely perfect.
tongue.gif
I'm taking advantage of her being sleepy this morning by nipping in and out of the house for random times, as little as 60 seconds and as much as 20 minutes, and after an initial howl she's not let out a peep since and has retreated to her crate for a nap. Between us we'll hopefully be able to work her up to a couple of hours over the weekend.

Is it normal for a dog to only poo once a day? If memory serves right the JRTs went two or three times a day. It is without fail an astonishingly humungous poo, mind you.
