sorry for the overly dramatic title...hooves stress me out!
the nail in mouse's back hoof has ripped down his hoof(i dont know how). the nail is now about 5mm from the shoe and has left a big hole and a split thing above it where it used to be!!! i dont know what to do about it! shall i put anything on it? will it get bigger? slightly panicking...its never happened before!
farrier is fully booked for a while..it may just be me but the hole looks huge hahah :p
(p.s if anyone recommends anything for cracking/splitting hooves in general - around the nails - please do tell. i have just started using kevin bacons hoof dressing)
will post pics when i get some :) trying to find a similar one on google images but dont know what to type.
but in general...his hooves kinda look like this

i dont like the cracks but without shoes his feet fall apart :(
thanks xxxx

I'll probably get shot down for this but hooves don't fall apart without shoes! I was told it would happen to my cob because he's too heavy to go without, well just over 4 months on and his hooves most definitely haven't fallen apart :)

The best thing you can do to improve hooves is feed your horse a good barefoot diet, low sugar/starch and the right vitamins and minerals etc.

Hooves don't tend to improve from anything you put on from the outside it all needs to come from inside.

Sorry if this isn't what you wanted to hear and I hope his feet improve soon :)

My boy is allergic to too much biotin etc in his diet, so we have had to try our best and supplement from the outside- he wouldn't cope barefoot because of this (we have discussed it with our farrier). We use the kevin bacon stuff in changeable weather, and when its really dry we use net tex summer hoof as it contains all the good stuff like biotin and keratin and seems to keep his feet moist for ages. It's certainly not as good as feeding it but it helps. Cracking will be due to the hooves being too dry, so a moist may help more than the kevin bacon stuff, which is for all year use I believe.

My farrier swears by Kevin Bacon hoof dressing!! I use it every day and I know that my tb's feet have improved no end! I also use a mix of iodine, teatree oil and eucalyptus oil - it's a really good disinfectant for the nail holes.

Looking at your horse's foot - I think that yes the clenches are rising and he could probably do with shoeing before too long - but he is also suffering from the weather as most horses are. The problem is that we have had a period of very dry weather followed by very wet - together with lots of grass. Hooves dried out badly and are now splitting.

Definitely keep up the Kevin Bacon every day for ever! It won't be a short term answer as nothing is - but don't panic! His feet are not that bad! Also I feed Happy Hoof - who knows whether it actually helps - hope so!
