Hi

I have a very sweaty cob!

He sweats easily in any situation, but travelling is a nightmare!

Doesn't matter what direction or what he's in! I don't bother bathing beforehand any more!

Do you think investing in a Thermatex and travelling him in that would help? Would he arrive dryer and more comfortable?

Thanks

In a regular rug, yes, but thermatex are designed to wick away sweat and keep the horse cool.

But, they are very expensive, so I wanted to see if they work well in this kind of situation.

Well, if you're itching to splash out, Premier Equine does a thing like a Thermatex and also a rug based on bamboo fibres (NanoBon?) which is meant to be the bogs dollocks when it comes to wicking. Worth a look...

I am never itching to splash out (!) but will have a look!

Thanks!

Anyone else?

I have a thermatex and it's probably one of my best buys.... yes they are expensive but are sooooo versatile so even if you do buy one and it doesn't help whilst travelling you will still be able to use it and it won't be money wasted :)

I think the thermatex would be fine, once your horse is out of the trailer and you've washed him off and you want him to dry as quickly as possible, but for him to wear it whilst travelling wouldn't have the desired effect, as he is generating heat himself, and the thermatex rug, which is very thick, would only make him hotter.

That's a good point. Hmmmmm maybe I am doomed to just have the sweatiest horse in the world!

I curse everyone else who leads their gleaming ponies off their boxes....bone dry!

Thanks everyone

He is going to be clipped soon

I have a Renault Master with 2 roof vents, but it doesn't seem to make any difference!

I always have all the windows open as far as they will go for P. I have a thick and a thin thermotex for her but i wouldn't use either unless I was concerned that she might get chilly. If I'm worried about her getting sweaty I travel her naked. I'm sure that clipping your lad will help a lot, then a thermotex might be good to keep him warm without him sweating up badly under his rug if he gets a touch too warm :)

i was thinking of this too as my pony even when clipped sweated like mad when i travelled him in a fleece in feb on a 20 min journey.

i travelled him home naked and he was fine.

I had a h/w Thermatex for my cob (given as a present) and although he was clipped he rarely wore it as was just too warm. Kept it for best at shows etc but couldn't have travelled him in it as would have been far too hot.

Agree with what others have said about OP using one to help horse dry off once they have arrived.

Also had a l/w Thermatex that didn't look nearly as smart as the h/w but was far more useful and eventually (after many years) wore out completely!

a thermatex may help him dry off when you get wherever you're travelling him but it will definately make him hotter during travelling. Better to travel him naked i'd say and save your pennies on the rug, there are good, cheaper alternatives and the fastenings on thermatex rugs are not good

we had a horse that sweated when travelling. just accepted it, and arrived at shows 2.5 hours before the class to wash him off and get him dry again.

and im not talking damp, i mean white lathered, tucked up the lot. it was sheer excitement and anticipation in his case. he loaded and travelled perfectly

I do love my thermatex rug, and think it's great for wicking off the sweat quickly.

What I would be tempted to do would be to travel naked, then throw on when you arrive to help your boy dry off?

i have a thermatex and on a hot day my horse will still get sweaty under it fine when its cooler so i would think yours will still get hot
my cob used to sweat up too i didnt put a rug on it made her worse

I normally travel my cob naked, but once we have worked and been washed off then he has his thin thermatex on to dry off :) I have not had any problems with it and have had it for some years now , it does not rub nor has it stretched.
