thermatex - do they all slip back??

I really need to buy a second cooler and think the thermatex are best for wicking and warmth but they always slip back if I leave it on overnight (in the middle of winter it's on under another rug or 2) - I only have the "normal original" version with no cross surcingles so was looking at the new "stable" version and wondering whether that would still slip? Anyone got one? Or any other suggestions for decent coolers? I'm toying with getting a Mark Todd but they always seem tight on the shoulders and not as good?
 
Friend has just bought thier stable version. It has a normal rug outer which gives the whole thing more stability as it is not stretchy. Although as yet she has not left it on overnight it doesnt look like it would slip back or stretch like normal thermatex.
 
I've got the Weatherbeeta thermocell rug with a full neck. It fits my boy nicely (he dislikes being rugged so I don't rug unless I have to, he has a high wither and I find weatherbeetas the best for him - he's least disgruntled in WBs :)), doesn't slip, does a great job of wicking and of providing warmth. Its quite a bit less expensive than a thermatex too :)
 
If you already have a thermatex and want one with cross surcingles, instead of buying a whole new rug why not get your local rug wash/repair just to put a couple on?

I'm planning to use it in the day under a turn out on my other horse - I ride one in the morning (so not such a problem if rug slips a bit as not left on as long) and one in the evening so the eve cooler needs to be VERY good as left on over night often with a couple of rugs over it. Would hate to put something on that still stayed even a little damp :(

...yes I know it's not ideal to put rugs over the thermatex btw but it's my only option and I have checked him many a time a few hours afterwards and he is lovely and dry :)
 
Yep, they always slip back teribly and stretch no end!!

Fab rug for wicking and warmth but never ever leave mine on over night or as an under rug, pulls horribly on his withers. I also had a weatherbeeta thermocell but had similar problems.

Have you seen the Shires thermoQuilt cooler? Absolutely excellent and doesn't budge and is less than half the price!

A good fitting Thermatex will not slip back! All of our rugs are cut by hand to a very general size guide, but we all know our horses are all different sizes. If your Thermatex rug is the right size on your horses neck and is being used on its own it will not go backwards. We always recommend that you go down a size on our Multi Purpose Rugs, although you should stick to your original size for any of the Thermatex Stable Rugs. We also recommend that our Multi Purpose Rug should never be used as an under rug - due to the nature of the weave, when the additional weight of more rugs is added this causes the horses hair to 'walk' the rug back of the withers, and it is unable to come forward again. Thermatex stretch because they are made of a single large piece of material where as others usually have a seam down the back. The seam prevents full contact with the horse which is essential to enable the rug to wick. They are more expensive I'm told because of the wool content, and of course they are still made in Wales. Always been into Thermatex rugs and talked to them in detail at one of their sale nights. Next one is November 19th at their factory. they sell off seconds (that I couldn't find anything wrong with) plus some ohter products from other English manufacturers.The other rugs are usually much thinner and I'm sure they don't provide anywhere near as much warmth.
 
ooh looks like the thermatex PR/marketing team are on the case with this thread lol!!

I hate mine. I don't understand their appeal - I bought mine about 10 years ago when I was a total novice and had been told what to buy and what not to buy. Since then I've only been able to use it as an underrug (doesn't slip back if another rug goes over it) when my usual underrug is being cleaned. Should sell it really!
