Thermatex Rugs

Any sort of thermatex style rug is not very robust, even the genuine ones snag easily as they are made out of a knitted fabric. I have had the genuine ones, thermalux and the Weatherbeeta version. I think the weatherbeeta one is the best value for money. Half the price of the real thing!

We do. They're fantastic rugs, though pricey. We also have Airborn ones which are similar but the thermatex seem to wick just a little bit better. They also last longer than you might think, so a def recommendation from me. Look on ebay for bargains - still not cheap but not as much as from a saddler.

I do - I have one real Thermatex and it does duty between four equines, ranging from 13hh - 16hh! I've had it a few years now and have found it very durable and excellent at wicking moisture away.

I have one and love it. It was expensive £120 but it is 100% wool which is why it works so well. I use it as a cooler, travel rug and even leave it on overnight if I put my horse away and he is still sweaty. I have used various types (not Thermatex) before and to be honest you only get what you pay for.

This hasn't been my experience at all but I do agree that the weatherbeata ones are effective, though a fraction of the thickness and warmth

I have a thermatex that is now 12 years old and has been with me through 3 horses and hopefully next year a 4th. It is a bit tatty round he front, but this doesn't effect the rug. They are great for drying sweaty or wet horses and I've used my to travel, dry, overnight pretty much anything. It was expensive, but not if I priced it per use. I paid the extra £10 or so and got x surcingles though as I had a real roller at the time

tbh ive got one and i dont like it, i dont find it that efective at wicking the sweat away, and the fastenings dont make it secure enough to leave on for any lenght of time.
maybe have a look at the mark todd coolex rugs as they have a very good reputation on here

All mine have them, expensive i know, but i wouldn't be without them, i think there very efficient and draw the moisture very well. I've had them for years and there still going strong.

I have the Cordura covered one and it's brilliant for this time of year, very warm and very quick at wicking. It's coming up to 10 years old and still looks good as new.
Also have the Cordura leg wraps (£5 horsey car boot bargains!!) and they are also very good for keeping old pone less stiff

I have used Thermatex for a long time now and love them. Yes they do snag now and again but when you buy them new they come with 6 or so different size matching patches. The only thing I would say is that they do stretch, but I would think any knitted fabric rug would.

I couldn't live without mine, they are just so versatile.

I have one but Im still unsure about it! Not really had to put it on a wet horse yet so its hard to tell if it works! I generally use it for travelling and shows when the weather is in between a sheet and a stable rug. They do fit well though, are very generous. I am thinking of getting one for my old shetland because I think she needs something slightly more than a fleece which I believe this would be.

Id never pay full price for one though - bloody fortune for a cooler! I bought my one second hand.

peachesandcream if yours is 6ft + I will buy it off you

I have one and love it granted it only cost me £15 (my mum found it in second hand horsey sale!) but I couldn't be without it and I think are def worth the money and I'm thinking of getting a second as its too big to leave Fleur unattended in it (she 6ft it 7ft3!).

Mine is I believe over 10 years old (as know old owner!) and is still in fabulous condition, yes has a few nicks but it has outlasted every other rug I have by miles.

Pros
-Effective cooler
-warm
-good quality
-keep doing the job for years
-can double up as an under rug/travel rug

Cons
-Expensive. Robinsons used to make a rip-off version that works just as well and beats Thermatex on the next point. I don't think they make them anymore though.
-Rubbish fasteners. You'd think on a rug of Thermatex's quality(and price!) they'd put some decent straps so you can leave them on at night without a roller and knots in the front straps.
-They do snag easily and appear tatty quickly but this doesn't cause them to fall apart or rip.

I bought one at YHL for my Icelandic - they were so helpful on the stand and recommended that I go for a size smaller than his usual rugs, which was great as the 5ft 6in cost £55.00. It hasn't been off his back since the show! He is hunter clipped as he has cushings and the Thermatex has been a godsend - he has it on as a stable rug when it is mild, as an under rug in the stable when it is cold and as an under rug outside as well. Money very well spent IMHO.

We use Thermatex rugs as coolers and wouldn't be without them. Had them for 6 years and they still look great. No snags or anything. We use them for travelling the horses in during winter, and as a cooler. As others have said, you get what you pay for. We have found them to be well well worth the money.

Thanks for all your advice.
i want to get one - might have to look on ebay mind as santa has over spent a little this year!!!!!!!

Thanks guys!

I use them and think they are great. They wear very well if looked after and are excellent for keeping horses warm and wicking away moisture. However, they are quite pricey! The only thing I am not very keen on with them is the fastenings - they are nylon straps with metal grip buckle things - I prefer the clasps that are on Rambo / Fal rugs and cross over straps under the belly, but I suppose that is personal preference!

I bought a new Weatherbeeta Thermo Cell cooler rug the other day - very smart, clasps and straps like a Rambo / Fal and good quality material. However, not quite the same appearance as the Thermatex. However, it was only £29.99 (I think they must have priced it up wrong

) so worth a try in my view!
