I'm seriously considering buying my boy a thermatex rug ready for next winter, he is terrified of clippers but gets very sweaty when I ride, I sponge off with warm water and then put a cooler on but it's not overly effective. So...

How long would a thermatex take to dry a hairy horse?

And the most important question:

What colour? Would love to see any photos of your thermatex rugs, especially interesting colours/bindings

:D

Can help on the drying time as I've always had short haired beasties but they are excellent rugs.

I've got a navy with white & burgundy binding for posh and a brown with beige for everyday but actually I think I prefer the brown one colourwise:o

I love them . . . we have three . . . an old, tatty, hole-y green one with navy binding that he came with and still works a treat, a black one with black and white binding, and a grey one with black binding . . . he wears the black and the grey as competition rugs/to travel in in the cooler weather and/or to wick moisture away from him after hunting/competing when it's chilly. They work brilliantly, the outer of the rug itself will be damp to touch/have beads of moisture on the surface, while he is nice and dry.

I can't speak for hairy horses b/c my boy isn't . . . but if he's sweaty or damp and I chuck a thermy on, he'll be dry enough to put to bed/put a stable rug on, etc. after about 20-30 minutes.

Hope that helps.

at the event yard we used to have 1 like yours & no matter how early we rugged him he still looked like a wooly mammoth mid winter! & obviously he worked hard so got v.sweaty

we used to take him on the 1st hack & by the time we had done the 2nd he was ok to be turned out with a turnout rug on so just over an hour :)

they are bloody amazing & if i could justify the cost i would buy 1 in a flash !!

I have three and I love them. It takes about forty minutes to get my pony dry when he is hairy, less when he is clipped. The leg wraps are very good, I cant afford them at the moment so am considering getting the oldest rug made in to a neck cover and leg wraps

I also have the thinner lightweight wicking rug, its very useful as its not as heavy so more suited to the summer, travelling and useful as an under rug too. It also has binding down the spine so doesnt stretch. Its also smoother so doesnt get loads of shavings stuck to it.

Its green and yellow which arent my 'colours' but is such a great little rug

I'd like a Thermatex for my other pony now. I have seen mallard bound with mushroom which looks so classy and fab. I am leaning towards purple bound with red though.

At a show today I saw cerise pink bound with yellow which looked just amazing - and I dont even like pink!

There is a reasonable market for second hand Thermatex rugs on ebay with some bargains to be had

Just but Bucas rug either TO or stable with they stay dry lining

I use the Celtic stable as horse in during winter at night

You can chuck it on wet horses and it drys them

No need to wait about for horses drying etc, pop it on put horse out or in stable and off you go.
Best invention every are them rugs.

I bought one for my NF for a similar reason - he's unclipped (work in progress, I'm hoping he can have a small clip this winter) but is kept ticking over in ridden/ground work & so does get a little bit hot & sweaty (or wet, if it's raining!)

It's been a god send this winter, as if I've ridden after work I know he'll be alright left in his Thermatex overnight.

I've got a bay pony & went for a brown Thermatex - boring, but it looks quite smart & hides the poo stains better!

Here's a quick snap of him in it ...

I have two in relatively boring colours; navy with red binding and burgundy with gold binding. They are great rugs though - they fit on the large side and do stretch so if you don't already know I would make sure you go down a size or two. I also have the matching leg wraps with the codura binding and they are fab; I use these after washing mud off legs and they are fab (and shavings don't stick to the outers).

Re drying time it takes about 30 -40 mins for my hairy boy ( who normally only has a trace clip).

Having established that they're wonderful, see if you can get a bargain as there seems to be a good second-hand market for them, unless you want a specific colour of course. My bargain of the year last year was a virtually new black thermatex for £30 at an table top tack sale, I think it was an older style with an old logo (maybe a few years old but hardly use), but the material is the same as the current one and it's brilliant, one of the most useful rugs I have.

I have a summer weight one in Mallard bound white - love it but it got eaten by mice! Going to patch it (Thermatex sent me some more fabric) and then I want to buy a standard weight one too later this year :)

Personally I think every owner should have a thermatex!
They're great rugs, soooo useful!
My girl had a burgundy one with yellow binding. Had mine at least 4 years and still looks New after a wash. She did have a habit of rolling in it though!
Sadly lost her last year but it's in storage till the baby is big enough for it. (although at the rate he's going, I'll have to get bigger than the 6"9!)

I got a brand new one from Barnardos for £10 !! My other is very well used and holey, a gift from a former YO.

They are worth their weight in gold, IF you can get them at a bargain price.

I brought a summer weight thermatex last year, its purple with purple binding. Got it from ebay for £37. Want to get a heavier one for winter, IMO they're fantastic!

I have the thermatex leg wraps and they are fantastic!! ..definitley going to invest in a thermatex rug now!

I love mine too!! Dries my lad off really quick and looks really smart for shows too, its navy with gold binding and has 'Riverdance Roski Rebel' embroidered in gold :D Now I'm just saving up to buy my mare one and am entering a dilemma over what colour to get...

I love ours - we have the hooded thermatex with matching leg wraps for the boys - I wouldn't consider using anything else, they are one of my essential pieces of kit on the yard.
