I found out today that the gypsy/traveller people near me broke one of their colts in to drive at EIGHT MONTHS OLD (possibly even SIX - his teeth say he's 12 months old now, but the old owners say he's older)!!! He broke down one day and collapsed on the yard after a FORTY mile round-trip to the pub, with 2 fat men on board. He was also injected with steroids to "make his muscles big" and they claim to have given him SPEED!!!

What sort of people give their horses speed?!!!

He was bought by a livery (whilst the colt was laid in a heap on the floor) because the owner refused to get a vet out.

It's now 6 months later and he's not all there, but she only wants him to be a pet, so fingers crossed he'll manage that.

These people make me sooooo angry!!! He was only just weaned!!!

I know, but it's still cruel. I dont know why they get away with it.
They just seem clueless when it comes to horses. I've seen them quite a lot lately and it's a shame because they're a nice bunch of lads/men when they want to be!

doesnt suprise me at all

. What confuses me is if their horses are 'worth' so much, then why oh why do they do this? and why don't they look after them? surely it's within their financial interest?

There is a guy close to me who is apalling to his horses. He sells them at the local sales and breeds from his mares every year. The RSPCA and ILPH have been but say they are well fed and have water so there is nothing they can do without "evidence" of his mal treatment which consists of beating, tying to a post in the field and leaving them there for 24 hours to "teach them respect" and god knows what else. He breaks his yearlings to harness and the poor things "just get on with it". Brings tears to my eyes and foul language to my mouth but he knows there is little I can do.

I think with cases like this a shotgun would remedy the situation and I don't mean the horses!
It sickens me too

To read about stories like this and gawd only knows I would not be able to cope if I actually witnessed anything going on.
