I have a fat hairy cob - he has the thickest, bushiest tail on the planet - really thick at the top round his dock but thinner towards the bottom (touching the floor). Does anyone have any suggestions on how I can trim/pull/thin his tail around the dock area so that it looks natural - its covering his wonderful bum!!!!! I want to keep his tail as long as possible for the flies over the summer - one day he may be able to reach his ears with it!!!!!!!

Just want it to look really natural. Help please???????????? THANK YOU

To be honest, cutting the tail will be the best way for it to look better.

Cut it so that it falls just beneath his hocks - which will give him a nice length for the flies, but make it look much neater and tidier.

It looked hideous when I did that 18 months ago, his mane is down to the point of his shoulder and he has feather like a cart horse, thats why I want it to look as natural as possible. Thanks though, would work on a different shaped horse.

Oster rake would give you a natural finish at the top. You may be able to use it at the bottom too but never tried.

Is this the thing that looks like a claw with a handle and is very sharp . If so where can I get one , someone at my yard has one but bought it at a show and I can't find one anywhere

We've got a really hairy cob and I bought one of the Oster rakes, following advice on this forum. It has made a wonderful job on both her mane and tail. Bought it off an internet site, but can't rememer which one. If you use seach engine you should fine one easy enough. Really easy to use as well.
