my mare's companion has - i'd say 2/3rd of the time - thick (think like pouring bubble bath) gooey dark yellow/orange pee - its horrible!

oh - and only a small amout (if she pees on concrete it covers about 50cmsq - whereas if my mare pees its like a river and water consistancy)

the rest of the time its either milky (presume when in season but shows no other signs) or 'normal' - but again never in a large quantity.

she also pee's very regularily

have asked the owner what she thinks but she shrugs it off and says she's always been a wet horse....

it just doesnt seem right to me.... could it be a symptom of something?

shes a 23 yr old traditional whos had a few foals in her past... currently in no work - always had chronic laminitis (for the 4yrs i've known her) until 9 months ago when i took over her management - has been lami-free since.
seems to drink enough - had ad lib hay and on a balancer.

she seems to drink enough - i re-fill their large water bucket with approx 4 x feed size tub trugs a day (between 2 horses and a goat)
i see her drinking quite regularily
condition wise shes' the best i've ever known her - can feel ribs - all crest etc has gone - she's looking great! full of energy - trots or canters up field to get her twice daily feed of balancer and a handful of chaff. (i've only ever known her lathargic and struggling to move due to pain/obesity/arthritis due to standing in 24/7!)

yes agree - if she was mine i'd want tests run but owner just shrugs it off everytime i mention is :(

i just wondered if it was a classic sign of something so thta i could say to her 'she may have XYZ' to maybe make her trke more notice of it

Because of her age and history i would say cushings, think they do free testing for this at certain times of the year. But if shes happy and looking well then maybe keep an eye on her and see how she goes? Her urine shouldnt be dark though..sounds like an infection?

What is the mare fed? What does urine smell like? Drinking lots does not equal more urine especially if the mare has issues such as infection of kidneys, bladder but as well as that I would also be worried about liver function and kidney function in general.

I know it's not your horse and it is hard to point things out and raise concern with an owner but at least if you say it isn't normal she may mull things over and decide to call a vet.
