Bought my mare 3 months ago, she was a bit snotty, but passed the 5 stage vetting fine. I was told she did have a bit of a dust allergy and to soak her hay. The last 2 days, her nasal discharge seems to be much thicker and yellow, could it be the sun/pollen? Outside the stable today I found a big bit of thick yellow gloop, it was so thick I managed to pick it up with one prong of the fork in one go and put it in the wheelbarrow. Any advice please?

Eeuggh!

Does you mare's nose smell if you have a whiff? Often a sure fired sign of certain infections by the smell of the discharge from the nasal cavity.

That's some seriously solid sounding pus to be that yellow. I think it probably means a vet visit.

Could be anything from a tooth root infection, COPD to Sinus Cysts (of which I have experience!)

well, she's just seen the equine dentist, and is fine in herself, not off her food, and not snotty all the time (and it doesn't smell), just intermittently? oh, and its both nostrils not just one
But, thanks guys will get it checked out - MORE MONEY AGAIN ARGGHHH!!! LOL

My horse had this on and off for months, vets found nothing at first but xrays finally shown a hairline fracture of his cheek molar tooth. It was missed at first as it was so slight. His 'snot' didnt smell at first but eventually was pewtrid. You cant miss the smell, it seemed to linger in my nostrils for hours.
My friends old mare has a discharge at the moment, out of one nostril though and it doesnt smell. Vet is treating her with antibiotics for teeth problems.
Good luck I hope you get it sorted soon

I must have been half asleep when I posted this morning. My comment doesn't make sense. lol

I meant to say, so Lord knows where the yellow comes from, that it must be some seriously solid pus to be able to pick it up on a fork tine.

See...doesn't that make more sense? :)

I dont think its a tooth as usually the discharge is from one nostril only (just had something similar occur with my horse). It could possibly be sinusitus (which is what they thought my boy could have had) which would need seeing by a vet and strong antibiotics to clear it up. If this doesnt do the trick worst case scenario would mean the sinuses would have to be flushed but I am sure it will not come to this so try not to worry. Hopefully the antibiotics will clear it up for you :-)

We had a horse in our last yard with sinus cavity infection- was about to get flushed etc.

I fed it Neem leaf (as much as it wanted on day 1, then a handful twice a day for 5 days. Foul smell gone, discharge gone, horse happy.

Vet saw the horse on the 5th day and was really happy, and made the comment that it had obviously been effective, and the horse was clear. And it stayed that way.

Might not work for this horse, but worth a go to avoid anything more invasive. Neem leaf has an antimicrobial, adaptogenic effect.

I buy mine from Herbsandspices.biz - they are called Cotswold Herbs.
Cost about £6 a Kg.

Might work for you - but like all of these things it's dependant on the horse.
