What size girths do your average ISH's wear? :) The girths I had, have been in the family for years so no idea what size they were (and they were sold with horse)

So now girth shopping and have no idea what size to buy, in an ideal world yes, I'd wait til she gets here and measure, but I have a fitter coming out the morning after she gets here, and imagine I will need one.

So your 16.2 ISHs - what size girths do they wear?

Well I imagine so, but then, maybe he's imagining I'll have one! :D during all this imagining I am on Rideaway (after successfully escaping without purchasing anything, not once but twice in a row!)
Ok I'll ring the saddler to check, good idea I concede defeat!! :D

*wanders off vowing to find something to buy said horse soon :D*

Previously I have to admit I have always had girths and it's never really come up - whether the saddle had brought their own or not. I can always ring him, he's a super nice dude. What if he brings one to fit it with and then leaves with his girth?!

Ah I have to buy one! :p :D there's just no other way forward! :p

So you reckon 50" then Marms?

I know BH isn't an ISH but he's a typical normal horse sized beast and he takes between a 48" and a 50" depending on how much grass he's scoffed. 50" is his normal one though. The small one is for winter!

My new ISH boy is currently in a 56" but then he is a little bigger than 16.2 I think (not measured him yet going to do that this weekend). My old ISH gelding who was 16.1 used to be in a 54" to 58" girth depending on the time of year.

Oh really? Care to share what a good girth is? I had always thought the elasticated ones (both ends obv) would be good to allow movement and breathing?

I have a leather girth with elastic but the problem with elastic is some people do them up too tight as it's really easy to do with elastic.

I think my girth is 52" btw but it's quite big on her.

I've just bought the stubben string girth and its great. My mare is 16.1hh warmblood x and she takes a 50".

It does depend a bit on what sort of saddle you want, mine is in a longer girth in a jump saddle than a GP for example :) My tb got awful girth galls from the stubben cord girth and she only had it on for 20 minutes :(

Nothing wrong with elastic as long as you aren't stupid enough to pull it too tight!

Seems like most people overgirth, elastic or no elastic anyway.

Im an under-girther if anything, I can't stand the thought of pulling them as tight as you possibly can. How awful must that feel for a horse eh? I have seen people who do girths like there's some badge of honour for getting the tightest hole on....beserk. It's like they don't realise the horse has to expand to breathe!
