Just grooming my horse and he lifts his tail and I see a thin white worm hanging out! I'm surprised, never had worms before, always done regularly.

Not sure what worm it is, anyone know which wormer to give? I'm about to head over to the feed store to see what they have but I'm not very good on worming knowledge!

Pin worm .
Consult your vet ,
We did five days panacur guard
And one month of rubbing round the dock and bum with an intermectin ? lotion.

Hi EmmaB it sounds like a pinworm, they poke themselves out of your horses bum and lay eggs around there - has he been itchy at all as they can aggravate them a lot. The best wormer to use is Panacur 5 day guard as this gets further through the gut system of the horse and the pinworms hang out towards the very end of the horses system. You can also help by cleaning around his bum and applying something slippy like baby oil so that the eggs can't stick as well around the area! You can use sellotape to help remove any eggs you see.
Pinworms can be quite hard to shift so don't be surprised if they come back or require a few treatments to get rid of them. They are relatively harmless compared with other types of worms though so don't worry too much.
The guard will also treat for large and small redworm plus encysted too just in case it isn't pinworm, but I suspect it is.

Great thanks everyone, I've had a look at all poo on field and can't see anything else in any droppings, can't see signs of rubbing but bum does look a little sore so going to clean it and I'm off to get the panacure 5 day as just spoke to my friend who used this on her horse recently and it worked. I'll give the vet a ring if the 5 day doesn't help!

Another recommendation for Panacur 5 day here.I started a thread in Vet about this and someone suggested wiping around the anus with neem oil,it stops the irritation, and disrupts the worm's hormones so they can't reproduce.I've been doing this after treating with Panacur and there is no sign of any itchiness or worms now and the pony's field mate hasn't got them either.

Look up Neem oil. I think someone posted on here recently about using it successfully to clear up pin worms. Cheers

Oops..just noticed previous poster suggested same already :)
