Things I should look for?

We are looking for a loan horse for my very novice husband to hack out a couple of times a week and thought about an older one who could live its days out here but was wondering what questions to ask about health etc
How long can they still be ridden for and what would be the usual old age symptoms.
Would it be better to place a wanted add or just keep looking?
