My new horse has been with me a week and a half now & I have ridden him regularly in the last week (just had Monday off because of the awful weather!) Have done hacking & played in the school a couple of times. On hacks he has been good but a forward walk but i dont like dawdlers!

But then today he was really rushing home which annoyed me so i kept making him stop & wait. i think i upset him because he got annoyed about having to wait & stomped about then started some mini rears. nothing nasty or dangerous, just lifting his front feet a bit. I kept at it though & didnt give in. I kept asking him to walk at my speed & stop if he tried to rush. However once we were back onto the road it was as if a switch had flicked & he was back to the sane sensible cob that i bought & we had a quiet walk home.

His old owner says he has never done this before & its completely unlike him. It only started half way round & settled once we were back on the road so if he was in pain then i think the behaviour would have been throughout the ride. I thought he was probably a bit scared of the 50mph+ winds that were shaking the leaves & the wind did get up more when he started the behaviour. I also thought maybe he was "testing" me as his new rider to see what he can get away with.

Do you think i passed his test? What do you think I could have done differently. I am just hoping that it was the wind that upset him & my sensible cob is back soon! If that is the case think I will just stick to the school on windy days

Thanks

Sally

Are you sally from Elms Farm with Josh? If not then sorry! But haha I think you passed - if hes not done it before I would blame the weather - he sounds like a lovely sort :)

I would have done the same, and insisted that he behaved especially as you havent had him that long, but if its any consolation my normally calm and laid back mare was acting like a nutter tonight and i think it was the wind!

yes thats me :) back home in Yorkshire though now with new horse Basil! (coloured in my sig). I think he was just upset about the wind & hasnt really settled in yet. Its easily to forget how new he is as usually he just takes everything in his stride
