Has anyone else developed hayfever or a similar allergy as an adult?

I find certain bales of haylage, and now quite extremely the hay we've currently got are making me sneeze uncontrollably, eyes puff up, throat itches and nose streams, basically until I've managed to get home and have a full shower :(

I have tried to 'soldier on' in the hope of overcoming it but it hasn't worked. I don't like antihistamines as make me feel rather high - driving on them is quite an experience! I have smothered my face in some antihistamine cream before and that made a slight improvement, but does anyone know if there's anything I can do/anyone else had this?

It's so annoying, as a child I literally used to spend my weekend IN stacks of hay bales (rather dangerously we used to make rat runs through them and climb amongst them) and never affected. Why now, body, why?!?!

I've suffered with hayfever on and off my whole life and always find it is worse in winter, esp with all the extra hay and bedding etc, and also if i have had even a short break from riding it seems worse.

Try one of the solid white masks for filling haynets and mucking out. also a small bit of vaseline on the rim of your nostrils.

if it is very severe you can get an injection in feb.

Thanks :)

See I wouldn't say it's severe - I can just about carry on day to day life, albeit driving home can be a bit hairy with the sneezing lol!

I'm basically just going to have a permanent cold. Annoyed though that As I didn't wash my hair last night I was woken up by the sneezing/itchy eyes etc.

Unless its something else (please let it be something else?! As I said, some bales of hay/haylage are absolutely fine, others are not!

Sounds like it sadly :( mine gets bad when I put new straw in and then I get a really itchy throat and wheezy. but then some bales are dustier than others.

Do you find it worse or the same as summer?x

hi ive become much more allergic as ive got older, i use a hayfever nasal spray works best at damping down the 'cold' symptoms, also if the over the counter antihystamines are making you high then go to the gp theres lots of other things they could give you to try:)

YES ME!
God, I hate it. I now take Singulair prescribed by the Dr every day to support my lungs as "in insist on still doing horses"!
When im particularly bad I also take a piriton in the morning. Its not much fun and if I say get a cold I struggle on top of that a bit.
But, Its pretty under control now and I try to be a bit careful- I have dust masks for haynets! and groom outside etc

Much worse now than in summer but ours are currently in 24/7 due to the ground and am having to do a lot more hay interaction than normal!

Ho hum, it could be worse - at least I can still do everything, just not prettily or quietly :D
