Over the last few weeks Inky has been very lethargic. He shows little interest in anything and doesnt even really bat an eyelid when the mares walk past him ( he's a 2 yr old colt ) He is eating well and everything else is normal ( poos, wee etc... ) he has been wormed and teeth checked and has no other symptoms. He just trundles along to the field and doesnt even play about anymore which is very unusual for him. We went to a show yesterday and he was very "flat" i.e. no presence about him, couldnt be bothered and everyone thought he was a gelding he was so laid back. I thought it might make him perk up alittle as we havent done a show for a while but it didnt

I know its nice to have a very well behaved colt but im worried because its so out of sorts for him ( not that he isnt well behaved, he is, just he is usually very alert ) but ive no idea what i can do about it??? Im not sure whether the vet would laugh at me if i called them?
Im not sure whether there is anything i can give him to pick him up abit.He seems very tired and i dont know why. Any ideas on what may be wrong or what i can do to help him??

Thanks a very worried Mrs_stinkbomb

Might be worth getting your vet to run some bloods to see if he is deficient in something e.g. Vit B, or has picked up a virus or something.

Buy Rambo from me to cheer him up, I'm sure thats what he's missing

Jesse was VERY quite a week or so ago, despressed and manageble(!) it turned out to be his teeth, very sharp, he developed a HUGE ulser. He was still eating though, like an ulser would stop Jesse. I can confidently say he's feeling back in good health again for better or worse. He is only two too.

I would personaly get the vet, at least get a blood test done, could be anemic or have a virus.

I would also get the vet out, they wont laugh at you, you're paying them!

Animals are very good at telling us when something is wrong and it sounds like he is trying to tell you.

He may have a virus, you could try giving him some NAF blood liquid, red cell or something along those line's i always give mine some where there a bit off and it seems to work.

No he wouldn't necessarily show any other symptoms if it is a virus.

My 2 nags passed a virus between them last year & the only way I knew they weren't quite right was when I rode them & they were just so flat & lethargic - one could barely raise a trot!

Blood tests confirmed it - 3/4 weeks rest each & a bottle of Red Cell & they were brand new!

Hope Inky is feeling better soon.

Not necessarily, my friends gelding had a low grade virus and the only outward signs were that he was lethargic and depressed. He is an older horse so was off work a while while he got over it.

You know Inky well enough to know when something isn't right - go with your instinct and get the vet - they won't laugh and if there is something it is better to catch it early then wait for it to get worse.

How did you do yesterday? I was meaning to come watch but then I decided to make the most of a nice day and spent it pulling ragwort!

He did ok, we got a second and a sixth which was good as the classes were very big. He just didnt have the presence he usually has thus the post!! I thought yesterday would have changed him but he was still the same thats why im thinking there is something not right. Sounds like a call to vet, at least ill know if bloods come back a blank!

FMN - Im sure hed like a Rambo and you know if i could he'd be added to my little mini team!!!

Thanks everyone else, thought i was being silly but im just so worried about the little mite

Mine has been very lethargic the last few weeks, he hates the heat. I know it's dropped off a bit now but it make take a few days to 'bounce back'. Just a thought?

That's a good point, you might want to check he's not dehydrated. And I'm sure the vet will check his temp.

Another vote for having a blood test done - my mare was like this and turned out she had a virus. No other symptoms just very quiet and not herself.

If nothing else you will have peace of mind. If they are clear, maybe a drop of red cell will perk him up - always did on my old TB which she was ok but a bit run down.

Hope all is well with him.

we had a filly do this, and had the vet out to do bloods etc.

She just went downhill for no apparent reason. It turned out to be a virus which she recovered from just given time and TLC.
