Hi

My boy has had a kick in the feild which has resulted to his fur being taken off thankfully not cut it is a bit swollen with a little heat,

he came in limping yesturday ( i was working did,nt know until today )

I have had him trotting in hand and he seems to be slightly lame on his right leg as he is nodding his head,

THE question is apart from hosing it down how long should i keep him stabled and how long before i should ride again

sorry he is my first horse

thankyou

He will be sore, cold hose and keep a close eye on his leg.. The skin isnt broken so thats good from an infection point of view but check for any small puncture wounds. If your atall worried then ring your vet, better to be safe than sorry. The last thing you want to miss in a worse case scenario is a bone chip from the kick. A vet would probably prescribe bute to take down the inflammation and as a painkiller, box rest only if necessary. Usually best to move around so they dont stiffen up. Hope that helps and that hes ok.

its impossible for any of us to say over the net how you should treat him. Firstly you need to call the vet. please dont hesitate to do so. He/she will probably do an examination and flexion test. The injury may be superficial and if so the vet might say give him the week off or something. A kick in the field can cause damage to bone /tendons/muscles and only a vet can diagnose this. Hopefully your boy will be fine but please dont leave it to long to get in touch with a vet. This is very basic first aid but i undestand as a 1st timer you might not know this. You may get rude replies as people on here are quick to snap at people who are inexperienced-ignore any of that- you have done the right thing to ask for advice. keep us posted how you get on

Thankyou to you both for your quick replies,

the injury point is at the top of his leg obvisiously around the muscle area, hav,nt noticed any cuts just taken fur off, he will let me touch him so that is a good thing. and i have cleaned it anyway with hibbiscrub just in case, as well as hosing it down.

Im sure alot of people on here will take advantage of a newbie, i have loaned for many years but never owned,

we all have to start somewhere and people like yourself who give good advice are the one,s that help out the most so i am very gratefull for the advice

thankyou
