My mare took colic in july and nearly died so im so concerned about her diet. at min shes turned out everyday to grass brought in a feed soaked hy. she also gets a bran mash in morning before she turned out and shes ridden 3/4 times a week for about an hour. although tonight when i broughg her in she just seems very quiet not herself she has eaten her hay drank and did a poop but i think she might be a bit gassy. is there anything i can give her to help settle her belly? Or im i just being paranoid? Her poop is of yellow colouring but she was in for two days due to bad weather and was eating just hay no grass.

Second ring the vet for advice, in the meantime if possible I would be walking her if she's gassy.. Get her moving and listen for gut noises to see if things are actually moving and doing things in there!

I wouldn't be on a forum asking for help, I'd be on the phone asking for the vet.

As we have just done with ours. The day I ask on a forum BEFORE calling a vet to a colicky horse will be the day I give up horses.

Ours has just been diagnosed with spasmodic colic and is already a lot brighter after the painkiller/anti inflammatory injection. Going up every hour or so during the night and hoping to find a big pile of poo at some stage.

Unless there are more signs other than just not being herself, I wouldn't be too worried to get a vet out just yet, I'd see how she is and just check on her, and then if any other symptoms appear or she's still listless tomorrow or goes more unsettled, then I'd ring the vet for possible colic.

Colease can be great for anything just a bit gassy. If she's eating, pooing, drinking as normal at the moment, then it's not too dire.

ETA - by all means ring your vet and have a chat over the phone and say you may need to call them back at a later time.

I agree really, from what you describe you may just be being paranoid but that's understandable, however you know your horse best and you should go with your instinct if you think there is cause for concern :-)

If she is the slightest bit sweaty get the vet out.
Our lad was fine at 1500hrs, sweated up and going down at 16 30,
vet out by 1700 but our lovely lad was dead by 17 45, his heart gave out.
Don't mean to scare you but it can be that quick.
Hope your mare is ok
