hey all

im in a bit of a tricky situation with what to do! i think a girl at my yard might be pinching things.

basically this girl is quite young and is on the town EVERY night of EVERY weekend, she doesnt sometimes turn up til 11 or so to sort her horse out and i think its over a year since she last rode it. anyway this isn't the point of my post although i do disagree with a lot of the ways in which she looks after her horse.

i see her feeding it on an evening and the yard owner keeps checking her feed bins to see if there is any food in there and there isnt (and hasnt for a few weeks). Also a friend of mine commented the other day that her feed seems to be disappearing rapidly.

also, we only buy hay, haylage and straw from the yard and we write it down in a little book when we want some. she ordered 2 bales of hay and 2 bales of straw 2 weeks ago and nothing since yet haynets keep appearing?? also, my mum saw some haylage in her stable tonight.

the yard owner made a comment that she thought she was pinching stuff but wont say anything to her, but if the yard owner doesnt say anything surely its not my place to say something even though whats happening is wrong! to me all evidence seems to be pointing to it happening and i certainly know if i catch her touching my stuff she'll get a few choice words from me.

i have been told she is in a LOT of debt both on and off the yard although the other day she turns up on a brand new very expensive looking motorbike, and as i say, she is out EVERY weekend (we know as shes always moaning shes hungover) does anyone have any suggestions or should i keep my mouth shut?

i would make sure my stuff was all locked away, and perhaps say to her next time she's around does she need anything ordered as it looks as though she's run out of feed/ hay / bedding?

thats a good idea in practice but a bit tricky for me as i buy big round bales of haylage for my two - would need hundreds of nets!

luckily my feed is in a seperate room to the rest of the yards (i share it with one other) so there is no reason for anyone to go in there without it raising eyebrows. although i must admit, i did have a brand new bottle of mark todd fly spray which has dissapeared off the face of the earth

i bloody hate thieves, buy a bag of sodding pony nuts for the price of a couple of your weekend drinks for gods sake!!!

i ride at a small friends only yard but i have resorted to having a chest to put all my stuff in as everything of mine kept going missing. ive gone through 8 jumping whips and 4 schooling whips because people have used them and not put them back, 4 pairs of gloves, my riding hat was left out by someone and got ripped to shreds by rats/mice, and 3 or 4 of my riding coats/jackets have also gone missing, only 1 of them returning.

i mean the whole yard are friends of the owners and you wouldnt think anything bad would happen, but believe me it does

Grrr, this is so annoying. I left a yard last year where the main culprit was the owners daughter. I would lock your bins somehow if I were you. At the yard I am at now I finally know what it is like for all of my feed and hay to go into my horse, and, all my fly spray only goes on my horse unless I offer it to someone else. Made a big difference to the budget that's for sure It's also nice to know I can put stuff down anywhere and it will be where I left or someone will have picked it up and put it on my shelf. It's priceless!

Strongly worded notes such as "OI! HANDS OFF" in your feedbins and boxes are good. Make them as strong and as unpleasant as you like, if someone IS taking your stuff only they will see the note and it may make them think twice.

Big bales are a bit different I can see that, you can't exactly tie them back up and know how much you have.

Write your name on EVERYTHING that can go walkabouts in permanent marker, a bit childish perhaps, but effective and very hard to explain away.

Mention it to her just in conversation?

I know how you feel, i got a chest freezer from a skip, cleaned it out and OH put a huge lock on it. Means my food is kept away from others.

Haylage is harder, ive not found a way to keep that from being nicked.

I went into poundstretchers and got loads of those toy boxes and combination locks. Put all my stuff in their and locked it up, so things can no longer be nicked!!!

keep your stuff locked up, if you catch her stealing from you never mind choice words break her bloody fingers, her financial problems aren't yours, if she wants to piss it down the drain it's not for the rest of you to pay for it

when i was on a yard like this i put set mousetraps in my hay - takes some practice to get them to sit nicely among the slices but gives people the message hands off!! also buy locking bins for your feed.

Can you lock all your stuff up in this room? And daft as it sounds, I'd almost be tempted to get a huge fishing net and wrap that round your haylage, securing that with a lock as well if possible. Would take her forever to pick enough through the holes to fill a net...

Can't believe your YO won't do something about it though quite honestly.

There is a yard near me which has a reputation for having some awful people on it. Some of the liveries get food colouring and colour their hay. They each use a different colour. That way they can see who is using it.

What a brilliant idea (presumably it only works if you soak your hay, though?). When I was at college, we had communal fridges on each staircase for people to keep milk, snacks, etc in, and the milk had a nasty habit of going missing. My friend used to dye his milk green with food colouring and no-one EVER stole his milk.

Lock all ur stuff away. Also - if ur worried about ur hay buy a big roll of black bin bags and fill them. I used to have to do it at my old yard but my haylage was never nicked again!! One roll usually did a whole round bale - it was a pain filling them (gen took an hour for one big bale) but once it was done all the hay was there ready to go.

Yard I was at briefly the yard owner used to pinch all the liveries feed. Trouble was, she also had a few small ponies which she gave lessons on and they all went bonkers, whizzing about and bucking off all the kids. Turned out, one of the liveries was feeding her TB racehorse cubes ha ha

After that we all chained the lids of our dustbins shut.

Hay is more tricky to protect though I like the idea of dyeing it.

As to all your stuff, definately worth buying a few lockable boxes or chest freezer. People give those away.

I hate thieving b*stards!
