i have heard of a horse for loan and i have spoken to the owner, im just abit unsure as to whether to have him. he is forward going part bred arab, 17 years but acts like a youngster, 14.2hh grey. he suffers from a locking stifle if kept on very steep ground which is how he has come up for loan. all i want him for is hacking a few times a week and maybe some pleasure rides/jumping if im brave. he had been barefoot for the last 12 months and is fed on simple systems. he was bordering laminitic 2 years ago but is now fine if not fed cereal/sugar. his feet grow very quickly and need to be trimmed every 3 weeks. he also has an issue with being bitted that i would think i can work on. what are your experiences with locking stifles? i have until the end of the week to decide whether to go and see him, im in devon and he is in south cornwall so i dont really want to travel that far to try him if the lon term prognosis isnt good. (it would be long term loan). Thanks.

Sounds lke you're asking for trouble!

I wouldn't bother....there will be another! I know it can be frustrating when looking but you need to be patient! The right horse will come along!

I had a horse with locking stiffles honestly it was a nightmare as nothing improved it and i could spend an hour getting it to free up, they need maximum turnout to keep moving i had to ride in two exercise rugs permently to keep the stiffle warm.

I would never do it again but its your choice

It really depends how bad it is..often with regular work it stops happening. However, with some it doesnt. If it only happens in the morning I wouldnt be too bothered as building muscle would improve things alot. If it happened when you rode I wouldnt touch it with a barge pole.
Mines still locks up a couple of time ayear in the morning but competes BD/SJ/ODE with no problems.
