Hi
I was thinking about part loaning my horse as I’m in college and the time and money to owning a horse is a lot ? it’s fine in the summer time now but during winter it can be a lot and was just wondering if anyone part loaned before? How it went and any advice or tips? How do you find the right person?

Hello! I am part loaning a pony at the moment. I pay £45 a week (including one lesson ad one ride alone) but for most people they are paying £15-20 a week for riding 3-ish times without a lesson. I hope you find someone lovely to loan your horse xx

Finding the right person is likely to be tricky- but if your horse is a relatively easy sort it will be fine. It can be better to take a chance on someone who is a bit more novice but willing to listen, over someone who is experienced but may disagree with how you want things done. I'm guessing you're relatively young, so you may be more comfortable with someone closer to your own age?

How many days are you willing to give up? You'll get more takers if you're willing to offer a weekend day.

I'd definitely get everything in writing, and if you/the part loaner are under 18, then you may need an adult to sign on your behalf. Definitely if the loaner is under 16 or so, I would want to meet their parents and know they are committed.

Show them how you want everything done and make any non-negotiables really clear.

If you want help with jobs, then you're unlikely to be able to charge a significant contribution- depending on where you are in the country, around £10 a day would be reasonable.

I can only advise from the other side but what I would advise to help you find the right person (I like to think of myself as the right person so basically am describing the owner of my share horse)

*be honest about the horse and its ability, ride the horse before the potential loaner does-I would think some people who are happy to hop on whatever, only going by the owners word, may be lunatics.

*if your horse is a safe type who might attract novices, are you willing to show them the ropes/give support in the early days?
*if not then don't be afraid to state you need someone who knows what they're at
*will you require a sharer on a temporary agreement for example, just during term type, and then not require one in the summer? Or do you want a long term one?
*how much do you need to charge? I pay 25 pounds for 3 days- be realistic about this, scout the local horsey ads in your area
*are you happy for them to have lessons - biggest thing for me was my horses owner encouraged me to have lessons which are great for getting to know him. He's safe as a house but he's definitely quirky. It made me feel that she was invested in building our partnership.

I know that all seems like advice for a loaner rather than the owner, but if you get these things straight in your head you'll find someone who fits you. Especially if you just want something term time, be honest about that as it may suit some people.

I was personally thinking of putting her in a stable which is €60 a week and then halving that cost with the sharer
They can ride her as much as they want though the week and stable does all the mucking out and stuff
She doesn’t seem happy at home you see she’s always pacing the fence as I only own one horse and I think she’s lonely
She’s 20 jumps a 1.20cm and looks after her rider

Where are you Katie, euro and the use of the word college (uni?) makes me think Ireland?

If your sharer doesn't have to muck out then I would think that 30 eur per week would be very good. It seems like shares are less common in the Republic too, so I think you'll have people bite your hand off.

Yeah Ireland up near the top
I might have to sell her if I can’t get a sharer and I really don’t want to ? she’s my first horse but I can’t ignore that she’s happier in a stable
