Thinking of a springer

See the KC website for an accredited breeder with excellent health test results. Do you want to work it or have it as a pet? I find the working bred more trainable but more excitable. Are you bothered about FTCH results? PM Alec Swan who can send you details of a great breeder :)

It'd be as a pet. We are an active family with a few acres behind the house, but do have cats and a toddler.

What are FTCH results? See, this is the reason for my post! I am not sure on breed specific things I need to look out for. Also I have noticed puppy costs vary massively - I've seen anything from £250 to £800

I bought mine from a recommended breeder, he doesn't sell any pup under 13 weeks old after they have had all jabs and have started basic training. I now have a lovely four year old who has been an absolute joy. She does need a lot of exercise as she is from working stock but we do not work her just make sure she is out and about most of the day. She is fantastic with our cats and even accepted the pet rat even though I wouldn't leave her in the room on her own with it.:D Her favorite pass time is raising birds from the undergrowth and she is constantly on the go. She is fine with the horses and loves children although again I wouldn't leave her alone with small children just because she is not used to them. They are a lovely breed but do need a lot of attention. I also have a springerxwelsh collie who is also a fantastic dog but has a bit more of an 'edge' to her but has been so easy to train.

I know someone with a working litter in Northants, if that is any interest. He is a gamekeeper.

Be prepared for a lot of work! Mine gets prob 3 hrs a day and is still irritating (and he's 7) Unlike my cocker who is very chilled out! I know a few people with them... some are lovely, some are like mine! I would never get another one!

Mine, one working, two pet bred, are happy with 20 minutes or two hours, they just get into a routine. FTCH is field trial championships, what working dogs do. If you want a pet, probably go more for the show type, might be a calmer dog. Do ensure you see them with mum and the parents are hip scored with good results. (This can be checked on the KC website) Working dogs might not have been KC registered or be health tested.

We have a springer x cocker- both parents were working spaniels. She's a lunatic and so clumsy! but the most loyal, fun dog I've ever met. The cocker didn't calm her down one ounce, she will be on the go from 7am till 9pm at night. But she will also spend the whole day in the tractor with my OH and not bat an eyelid, just sleeps and watches the world go by.

I found out today her breeder is planning another litter... I've got 3 months to persuade OH that a half sister or possibly a full sister (the breeder has 2 springers- mother and daughter) is a good idea ;)

Here's our nutty girl...

I have a working type and wouldn't swop her for anything. She is loyal, affectionate, very obedient, was easy to train and is brilliant with the cats and a baby but you will need a lot of energy. Mine is on the go all day, we have a stud so she has plenty to do but a Sunday afternoon snooze is no longer an option! She is also a little crazy but when my ancient Lurcher departs this earth, I will definitely have another one, in fact Twizzel's is SO gorgeous I might just dognap her.
