Thinking of breeding

ive been in horses many years and competed all over the country. ive recently had an accident that will keep me out the saddle for a couple of years at min. so im considering buying a broodmare and breeding my own foal. i have all the time in the world, so naturally i want to take my time and learn everything possible about breeding. i literally know nothing about breeding horses at present. i am familiar with dogs, so i know its not for the faint hearted.

my question is: are there any highly recommended books out there?
 
So sorry to hear about your accident - I can totally sympathise with you having been in a similar position myself whereby several operations as a result of an injury meant I was unable to ride for 4 years. I have to say I never would have thought I would have coped as I did but am now totally bitten by the breeding bug.

i dont think id be able to do a course. i am confined to a wheelchair. i would love to do one, but any hands on work i wouldnt be able to do.
i have ordered foal to full grown now and a veterinary one. does anyone know of any books to do with breeding a show horse, genetics that type of thing?

Ditto - this has been my 'Bible' Great no nonsense common sense.
I think there are a few things that are essential to know before you start brreding.

1. It is TOTALLY addictive.
2. You will more than likely spend more than you earn (or is that just me

)
3. If you are not already insane

you soon will be.....
4. You must enjoy sleep deprivation.....

Seriously its great - if you have the resources, time and money go for it and enjoy!!
 
"Train Your Young Horse" by Richard Maxwell is meant to be an update for "From Birth to Backing", but personally think both are useful to have.
Also for foaling I found "The Complete Book of Foaling" by Karen Hayes very detailed and very helpful.
Now waiting for my second foal. There have been panics and things never go exactly to plan but it is SO rewarding (except financially).
