Thinking of defecting from NFU: any alternative recommendations?

My livery yard and horses are all insured with NFU; its costing us a fortune (and I believe they're increasing their premiums quite viciously this year) and the accountant blew through his teeth quite violently when he realised how much for insurance we were paying out, he says there's companies out there who cover properties with much higher risk than ours, at a considerably lower price, and that we should shop around.

The horses we have are both veterans; used just for hacking/lopping around, so basically they'd just need third party liability and no more, so am considering BHS Gold membership to cover this aspect, but not sure if I'd have sufficient cover for if say they got out of the field and caused an accident???

Anyone else giving serious thought to defecting? And to where???

I'm with KBIS for both my horse and trailer. They are insured under seprate policies as this worked out chaeper than a joint policy (different underwriters).

I had a vets bill claim in 2014 and they have so far paid out without question.

Not sure about your livery yard but I moved my horse from NFU to Carriage House and have been very pleased with the service I have received. They have paid out with no quibble everytime I have made a claim. The premiums are very reasonable (I have trailer insured with them too). NFU has much more cover eg. higher vet fees limit and transportation but other than that Carriage House has good cover.

You could try Shearwater. My lorry is insured with them inc. recovery and they were £250 cheaper than NFU. I've never made a claim so I cannot say what their customer service is like in that situation.

If any horse you own caused damage you were liable for - whether it was out riding, the horse escaped its field, etc. - you'd be covered as a BHS Gold member. This applies to any horse you own, look after or ride (terms and conditions apply; see our website for full details).

The public liability insurance provided as a BHS Gold membership benefit now also extends to £20 million cover.

Gold membership also includes personal accident insurance in case you're seriously hurt or involved in a fatal accident. If anyone is concerned they need a higher level of cover, e.g. for loss of earnings following a broken limb, we'd recommend looking at a specialist rider insurance policy from a reputable insurer.

Both types of insurance on our Gold membership are provided by South Essex Insurance Brokers (SEIB), so you can be confident it's from a market leader.

Full details on both the public liability and personal accident insurances, plus other benefits of joining our charity, are available at https://www.bhs.org.uk/membership/types-of-memberships/gold-membership.

My ISH is with Kbis my ponies are covered by my BHS gold membership. Insurance premiums can be ridiculous these days so shop around. I used to be with PetPlan years ago but Kbis have always beaten them pricewise & same cover

I'm bhs gold membership. You get £10 million insurance companies usually give a lot less. Try scottish equestian insurance if trying to save money insure the value for £500 but you must say horse cost £500 and take everything but vet fees out of policy and use alongside bhs gold membership. They insure £4k vets fees with £140 excess or you can choose £500 for lower monthly payments. They are cheaper than kbis and pay out ived had over £15000 paid out over last few years over a number if horses they are quick to pay and will pay the vet direct claims usualy sorted within 2 weeks.

I've been with KBIS for two years, both for horses, trailer and lorry. I don't have public liability with them as that's covered on my BHS gold membership. Their premiums have been competitive and they have been brilliant when I've had to claim vets fees and were helpful and sympathetic when I had a loss of use claim.

I've just had a look at other insurance companies and no one has come much cheaper than NFU which is disappointing :( I tried kbis, shearwater and a few others and just not enough to make me switch.
