If your land is agricultural rather than for equine use you would need change of use. I would also strongly recommend, if you haven't already done so, drawing up a formal, legal tenancy agreement.

Agree with millikins about a tenancy agreement. Lay down all that you expect of them..poo picking/regularly wormed ponies etc and who is responsible for fenceline repairs etc..otherwise you may not remain friends for long...sadly.
