Hi everyone, as the title states, I'm sadly thinking of selling my beloved mare. Reason being I'm at college & don't have the time for her anymore, my dad looks after her whilst I'm away & whilst I am eternally grateful, she's just not receiving the care that I think she deserves. She's 17 now but fully sound and well/no health problems and would make a great horse for a small teen to ride but I don't know if I can bear to part, I've had her for nearly 10 years & I know her inside out, she was my first horse & obviously I'm scared about what will happen to her if I sell her on.

Has anyone got any stories to share which will help me? It would be great to hear them :) are there also any do/don'ts I need to know about when selling, as I've never done it before.

Thankyou in advance for any help, it's greatly appreciated.

If you can wait until the spring to sell as you will likely have a larger potential purchaser field to try and pick the right owner from, that being said if you are happy to advertise over a long period there is no harm in trying and advertising but dont be concerned if there is little interest/the buyers who turn up arent right for her as many purchasers will pop up from the woodwork come spring time :).

Ive never sold any of mine yet but some people on here have lovely stories of homes they have found :)

Lurcher, loaning her out isn't really an option as my dad is a little funny about letting her go to another yard, in fear of them just doing a runner I suppose, he's a bit set in his ways.

Thanks for the advice Becca, I'll take it on board should I decide to sell, I'm really in limbo at the moment!

its so difficult when they are a much loved horse. One of my lads needs to go as he just doesnt like the showjumping but whilst he is a dressage diva I am NOT! However I decided not to pop him on the market before winter and a friend rode him a few times and decided she really liked him so now fingers crossed he will be going to her in spring when she moves her boy on to a new owner :) Of course its not set in stone but Im happy to wait as hes very special to me and if she can still have him I know it couldnt be a more perfect home for him if I designed it.

Could you not try LWVTB but with the horse to be kept on your yard? That would give you chance to really trial his potential new owner and make sure they are the right partnership and similarily gives the new buyer chance to confirm its the right horse for them so less likely to have a problem and then sell her on. You may even become friends with her owner and they must live in the nearby area to be able to come to your yard so may even be able to see her sometimes once she was sold. :) just an option to think about, in an ideal world and all that!

It is! Don't think I could bear it if I never saw her again, I'd much prefer to sell her to someone in my area. Glad that things are going well in terms of selling your boy!

Thankyou for the help, I know I'm trying to hold on to her but it's a bit selfish of me as it's putting her wellbeing in jeopardy, I need to man up I think. haha

If your Dad is funny about letting ponio go to another yard whilst on loan you could always specify 'to stay on current yard'.
Alternatively you could advertise for a sharer so she gets a bit of attention.
