Your tips and tricks required please folks!

Autumn detests mane pulling with a passion. Even just individual hairs when shes had a good work out to open her pores she goes mad. At the moment its thickness rather than length which is the problem.

Previously we have had to have her sedated to do it but quite frankly its a)expensive b)means we cant keep on top of it inbetween and c) I just dont like having to sedate her just to have her mane pulled, seems a bit unfair to have to drug her up but to be honest it makes the experience far safer and easier for all parties involved!

So, any other hints or tips for what we can use? A few people have said use a tail rake on the underside to thin it out however I'm a bit wary especially as she is plaited up quite a lot that were going to end up with horrible sticky up and out bits when shes plaited. Help!!!

Some people may hate me for this but have you tried twitching? Makes the whole experience nicer for the horse and keeps the people safe although I know some don't agree with it. Really the only way to keep a mane thin and without the 'sticky outy bits' (technical term!) is to pull and I have tried a few!

This.

A mane rake used carefully will do a good job with no more sticky out bits than if it was pulled, I use mine on most horses now, a trim with scissors to shorten and it is so easy. I find a solocomb chops too much at the roots and does leave a sticking up regrowth, something I do not find by using the rake.

Solocomb is great but you do have to use it carefully. Only a few hairs at a time, just like pulling, then you shouldn't get the 'sticky-up bits' A Solocomb definitely shouldn't be used as a shortcut.. it will takes as long as pulling to do a decent job.

Hi, my boy also hates mane pulling with a passion so I don't see any point in having a major battle over it.
I use thinning scissors on the underneath of his mane and also to trim the length. This looks tidy and is easy to keep right length and thickness to plait easily and if you only use under neath mane you don't get sticky-out bits on top.
Also it's really quick to do as an added bonus!

Was also going to suggest a solocomb, my two can't stand their manes being pulled but are fine with this and now doze off as I do it which makes the whole situation so much nicer!

I have tried a solocomb with a very 'choppy' effect and also used a rake which i found useless for a mane but a god send for a nice neat pulled looked tail!

I have a thinning comb which I use on the underneath of the mane, as if brushing it but over onto the other side so I'm doing the underneath.
Worked really well as my horses mane is quite thick even though being a appy x tb it really shouldn't be!
Made his forelock much better! Only cost a couple of quid too
