Thinning manes

Any advice on how to thin my connemara's thick mane? He hates it being pulled and makes it impossible for me, so I've been using a solocomb but it seems to have made it even thicker and be like a mohawk! ANY ADVICE PLEASE

Tail Rake's are good at thinning out not the oster ones though, never had one of them sharp enough to go through my horses manes and tails, If your dont get too carried away with it the results are brill.
