Morning all,

Happy Friday!

OK, I am pooing my pants today, tomorrow I have my riding and road saftey exam. It has completely snuck up on me and I havent managed to find the time to do any training other than read the BHS manual, so Im going to give it a bash and see what happens! Anyone got any hot tips? Any advice appreciated!

Thanks

R

Did you do the course before?

Im sure your be fine its common sense more than anything!
Make sure you look behind you alot - I remember them stressing on that!

!

Thanks will remember that one, I should have been much more prepared but now its too late to cancel so I'll give it a bash and Ill have learnt a lesson for next time if they dont pass me!

ALSO...I think I remember...if you want to crross the road to go down another road / path and your on a horse that doesnt like to stand still to wait for traffic to pass then keep going and cross when its clear further on...then you can go back the way you came and then go down the road.. (your be on the right side of the road then)

Also if you go around a drain on the side of the road look behind you before you go round it!

I did mine about 5 yeard ago now so may have been updated a bit!!

Good Luck!

I did mine at the start of this summer- and the rule I stuck to was this:

Look
Signal
Look
Manouver (sp?)

Good luck, most of it is common sense! And make it really clear when you look, otherwise they won't see that you are looking! And wear some hi viz stuff!

Bramble09 - Thanks will have this written up my arm! haha

Thanks Faro!

Quiet night with head in the highway code is on the cards tonight!

Go onto the BHS website and look up the syllabus. The exam is run just like a Stage exam (compulsory and supporting elements). Look in the back of your manual and learn the questions and answers. You need to get 8/10 right in the theory section to proceed with the rest of the exam.

You will be asked a number of oral questions as well, regarding fitting of tack, worn or unsafe tack, materials for bits and stirrups, shoeing, hand signals etc.

The simulated route will be laid out, probably with sports drill cones, and will include junctions, traffic lights, hazards and obstructions, an emergency dismount/remount and a trot section. You must get 26 compulsory elements right, plus a minimum of 12 supporting.

If you pass that, you go out on the road. This route could include all sorts of things, plus the unpredictable. You must get 11 compulsory elements right, and a min of 3 supporting.

The examiners will provide a hi-viz numbered tabard and 4 leg bands for your horse, but if you have any other hi-viz stuff you can wear that as well.

Remember: OBSERVE, SIGNAL, OBSERVE, MANOEUVRE

Any other questions, just ask

Thank you Rowreach! Have lots of hi viz accesories that the examiner will be blinded!
Do you know if you find out final results on the day or do they come in the post like the stage exam results do?

Thanks again

You get your results/feedback on the day (after each section) unlike the Stages, for the simple reason that if you don't pass bits one and two you don't get to do the 3rd bit

Please don't be cross with the examiners if you fail though

that's the one disadvantage of having to give people their results on the day

You will get a little results sheet telling you how you did (and which bits you need to work on if you don't pass) and most examiners will tell you what you need to do to improve (they may tell you what you need to concentrate on even if you pass).

Did mine in may and passed, they told me I did better than some because I took the time to look, don't look at the ground look sort of a vertical line from the horses tail. Also you don't have to do that many things in the actual ridden test, the main ones are the simulated, when you dismount remember to look ALL around you not just behind and the same when remounting

Don't leave a road from the little slip path, say on a junction, always head in a line parallel to the kurb up to the white lines, and look left when turning out (for cyclists) same applies when turning in, look right but cross to the shortest distance. And the tip we had was, if you can't turn in at that junction, go further up and turn at the next opportunity and come back on the other side

Good luck!!

You'll be fine!

Remember to use either white gloves, or hi-viz gloves, they were really strict on that in my R+RS test, and wouldnt let people who didn't have them on the road so they automatically failed for being innappropriatly (sp) equiped.
