....I'm very curious, and as my aunt has hundreds of baby goldfish she wants to get rid of, I'm wondering if I should take a couple and put them in Ellie's trough.

I'm worried that they will need feeding though.....surely that will not be good for Ellie? Or is the idea that they feed purely on algae and bugs?? And does the fact that there is no filter matter?!??!

I dunno, it seems to work but I feel I wouldn't like to drink water that has a goldfish swimming in it, so wouldn't want my horses to either ...

Know what you mean, Zigzag...and Ellie is a fussy bugger at the best of times....but she does get lots of bugs in her water (even though I clean it out once a week). Might give it a go, just with two fish....can always give them back to my aunt if Ellie develops a water phobia!

Do you have a tank?
We don't put them in the horses' water, but they do go in the tank that holds spare water in case we can't use the mains.

They keep it lovely and clean

I have some in my trough - they've been there three years and I've never fed them and they're still alive

They keep the green algae at bay and eat the bugs in the water.

Nope, we've just got a little portable metal trough, about 4 ft long and 2ft deep, that we can move around the field and fill up with the hosepipe!

You might kill the fish if you are filling it up all the time with a hosepipe, they aren't very good at coping with water straight from a tap. Your Aunt should be able to help you though.

I'd give it a go out of morbid curiosity! Can you live with yourself if they die?! Go for it!!
