It's interesting.

I would have assumed they would have a snooze, drifting off into sleep, followed by deep snoring and looking somewhat dead - like normal horses at grass.

I'm starting to agree with the others, that they are all sleepy. Their routine is a little mucked up because they are not in their stables.

Is it because, at grass, they need a guard on duty?

I've always seen horses taking it in turns to have a morning sleep when living 24/7 at grass.
He is the big top horse so yes I imagine that could have been a part of it. He’s also the one who gets bothered by things so a strange noise would upset him. he also seems to hear and see things that don’t exist so can be a worrier.

I agree with scats - if a horse can’t get its REM sleep then it will suffer from sleep deprivation and this is when this happens. Mine come in almost everyday for at least a couple of hours as they don’t like lying down on the hard ground. A horse only needs 20 mins of REM sleep per day, some can get it in the field and some just cannot - and makes sense as you have changed their routine.
