This is proving to be harder than I thought...

Who knew that in a bad economy, in the middle of winter, that it'd be so hard to find a horse to take on loan!? I'm looking to take something for the next 2 years to dressage and showing.

I have a couple of options...one is my RI's horse which might be perfect - he'll be ace to compete but might be a bit too much horse for me when it comes to hacking. I've got a date to go sit on him but I'm keeping my eyes and ears open for other options anyway.

The next option is hundreds of miles away, in NOrth Wales (I'm near Edinburgh). My friend down there has made some queries and has come up with some who the owners have said would be willing to let them come to Edinburgh for loan (one is not for sale, a few others are). They'd be happy to have them be dressage schooled / shown. Some are younsters and are at least backed.

And in Scotland? Maybe one other, a retired showjumper but I'm not quite sure about as the owner is not sure if it'll go in a dressage legal bit. There might be an Arab mare that another friend has inquired about as well. I've yet to phone on that one.

I honestly expected to have lots to choose from...so three in Scotland and three (or more) in Wales.

What am I doing wrong? I've scoured the sale/loan ads. I've asked friends with contacts to ask around. I've put up wanted ads on forums. Or is that about as much as I might expect? Maybe I'm just being too picky...

Extra strong coffee offered for suggestions!

finding something near edinburgh is practically impossible my little sister has been trying for months she's now just riding the ponies for the YO that were taken away from the original owner due to cruelty and the sspca getting involved you could try Graham Irivine as he loans horses out but they have to stay on his yard only problem is is that i cant rememebr his number or how far away they are.

Have you tried to put an ad up in the drum, millers etc as alot of people put horses for loan on the notice boards rather than on the net if they want them to stay local

I have been looking for something to buy to bring on for a few months now and have found anything half decent over my 2.5-3K budget. I've given up looking in Scotland and have been to the midlands but still nothing. I keep reading posts about how horse prices have dropped but not my experience at all, and it ties into your difficulty finding a loan horse.

If you ring Eric who is one of the Senior Instructors at Gleneagles he will tell you that Highlands can do great dressage - he does. He is an enthusiast.

Have you put out feelers via Highland pony Society?
