I listen to the radio and hear the ad,the one that tells you about keeping your attention span for looking out for motorcycles and so many are killed on our roads....Fine and fair enough,so why can't we have an advertisment for us as riders, surely we are just as exposed for being just as vulnerable as a motorcyclist! Yep,who would pay for it,as we don't pay road tax.......but,even if every horse insured, say had £1 added to the policy, then this would cover future advertising on radio(Much cheaper than TV,and people do tend to listen to the radio when driving!)
Please don't all shoot me down, and' Yes', new learner drivers do cover horses on the road whilst learning to drive.....but,surely we need to keep educating, even after people have passed their test....as to the unpredictability of horses on the road! What do you think?

yeah, were probably even more exposed because we cant get out of the way as quickly as bikes....and we dont make any noise. pretty stupid really how little mention we get

If it makes you so cross, do something about it!! The only reason that there are Think Bike ads is because someone got off their backsides and did something.

I agree, not least because motorbike riders should be at least 18+ (though depending on whether you're in a less savoury part of the UK this may not apply) whereas horse-riders can be children, young teenagers and so on, with or without grown-ups in attendance. And even if a grown-up was in attendance, there isn't much they could do if a driver makes a stupid decision.

The irony is I'm not sure whether apparently 'ignorant' city drivers are worse than apparently 'knowledgeable' country drivers. We have people who live just down the road from our yard who treat 'their' country road, with all its blind corners, as a rally track. It's also a good short-cut to avoid some main junctions so we get delivery vans and trucks using it, but by and large they're actually quite good about slowing down, disengaging the clutch, pulling wide, etc. In fact, I was out with another girl whose horse napped big time in the street at an approaching transit van, and the driver pulled over, switched off and sat quite patiently for about five minutes as her horse had hysterics and finally got past. Anywho, I've digressed. A lot.

There is already an advert on radio to slow down for horses, or there is on the radio station i listen to anyway..

But i agree, awareness is key! they could combine horses in the same advert as cyclists to save money if that was the problem

[/ QUOTE ] Hmmm. Personally I thought that encouraging discussion on it in the first place is 'doing something'. Better to do the market research first before organising the full demonstration march through London, eh?

Apologies for offending you.

I misread this as you letting off steam without any intention of doing anything about it.

I think that "Think Horse" radio ads are a great idea. Good luck with getting them off the ground.

i nearly got ran over the other day the b******ds dint even slow down but my mate was on the side of the rode with her bike and they slowed right down luckly i had phoned her and told her to get off the rode so as they started to slow down she got in the middle of the rode made them stop and then i came round the courner i gave them a peice of my mind but then tell me they dint no that it was an offence not to slow down for horses!!!!!!!!!

Liking that idea.....if haulage companies can slow down London for their tax on fuel 'thingy'.....then we horse riders can for having an ad to save lives!

The difference here is that everybody - in some way or other - is affected by the cost of fuel, for horse riders to do this it would just be seen as a load of rich idiots being a nuisance. (Yes, I know we are not all rich, but that is how many non horse people perceive us)

Count me in to hack up the M40!

I was nearly hit by a 4X4 towing flatbed trailer last week, he made no attempt to slow down. This was on a straight bit of country lane with good visibility (I had hi-viz on me & the horse), and I'm pretty sure they were local, also met lots of rat run people during same hack who were all fantastic, slowed down, went wide etc
