But how long, on average, does:

Small bale hay last

For two horses. One who has adlib hay.

How many per week, would you expect to go through?

I'm only used to big bale and not being on livery...so just wondered how much I'm looking at using each week :)

Thanks!

I have a 17hh who is in 24/7 at the moment due to injury, she gets through 1 small bale every 2days, I'm guessing atleast 1 a day if one horse is adlib?

Im using 2 to 3 per week at the moment with the snow. Before is was more like 1 to 2. This is for one good doer. Id say for 2 horses you are easily looking at 1 a day xx

Depends on how big your horses are.

We have just used 4 bales of hay for 3 horses over 2 days. They were turned out for a few hours each day.

For my 16hh growing youngster I would expect to use at least 5 bales per week.

Sadly the answer (as with anything horsey) it depends. My 17hh has 3/4 of a bale at night and my 14hh has 1/2 a bale they then both share a bale in the field in the day.
So 2 and 1/4 a day for two - but they are both oldies and not overweight at all so it is really ad lib.
I make my own so I am more generous than I suspect I need to be - any that doesn't get eaten over night goes into our pigs so not wasted!

Cool thanks, I was working on the 1 1/2 a day theory to start with. 1 for big lad, half for baby coblet.

Ideally, trying to get a big bale haylage for big lad to munch through and just keep the baby cob on hay...but trying to find someone to just deliver one or two haylage bales is proving hard as not worth the effort for them really.

My 2 are out 24/7 and I reckon on a bale between them a day. Both 16.1ish, but one is in foal, due beginning of April and one is a 4 yr old on winter hols. They had 2 today beacuse of so much snow......

That's ad lib for both of them - always a bit left the following morning.

1 bale was lasting my 2 a day... but they are in 23hours at the moment because of the snow and ice... they will go out again tomorrow so then it will last them 2 days... i hope...both are adlib :)

Depends on if they have anything else, how big field is if anything else, what type etc. We had one who had one and a half per day (growing big lad who stopped grazing when winter fed). Others who barely had any as very good doers and would carry on grazing alongside.

What do they have atm big bale wise - could tell you what that equates to roughly in small bales.

I'm using a bale a day for my 15.2hh cob and my 16.3hh ISH, both who are on rationed hay cos they're good doers. They have straw as additional forage and I'm using two small bales of that a week as fodder.

Thanks.

They're not kept together and not rationed at all and mixed with others at the moment, so I can't really guess how much they're eating each. Big horse has adlib haylage out in field, but is with other horses. We go through a big bale every 2-3 days. Baby coblet, is in the barn, has adlib in the feeder but again, is with a barnful of other horses and again, a bale is used every 2-3 days but between all of them [approx 15 I would guess].

Ah right. Well Amber and Ffion trough through a round bale per week/8 days adlib out 24/7. They probably eat less inside.

I used nearly 10 bales for two horses this week in the snow, when not snowing use between 7 or 8, does this sound too much ? they eat it all but I said it to someone the other day and they nearly fell over and said they only use 1 to 2 a week for there horse:(

Mine would be kicking the stable in.

Mine and my friends live out 24/7, in one field we have two sports horses (16.2hh and 16hh) and a cob (14hh), they have 2-3 decent sized bales a day (these are not small bales...equivalent of 1.5 bales at least), in the other field we have a 15hh heavy cob and 2 mini Shetlands and they have 1.5 of the above bales. Doesnt sound like much but they actually still manage to trample alot into the ground
