Just trawling through some ad's & came across this sad sight;

i think this poor horse should be retired, passed on to a charity if need be, But Not sold for riding, what do you think folks ?

Despite looking a little tired in the photo (and maybe a little garrotted by his reins?) I think its a massive jump to say he should be retired!

With a little love and TLC he could make some happy hacker or scared first time owner a very happy friend.

Wasn't Welham still out WINNING at 19...?
 
Not sure, he looks older than 19 but might just be his breeding or the photo, he looks worn out?! I'd say a hack once a week probably wouldn't do him any harm though? Not really fair to sell him on to do jumping etc. though IMO.
 
I think thats a big assumption to make from one photograph. Many horses at his age need work to keep them going, I think he deserves a loving home with a novice to pootle about the lanes and have a nice time

Yup - if I needed a happy hacker and family friend, I'd be calling up about this lad, he sounds like a little angel. With most older horses they quite enjoy a little work and getting out and doing things, look at Basher and Jeds in the PG - still out and looking sublime in their 20s.
 
I think if you look beyond the horrendous tack and VERY unflattering picture in every sense... he actually looks like a nice healthy horse that could go on another 10 years.
 
The photo is not a very good one. I think he's head is down due to the way his tack is holding it down, so he looks fed up. If he has not had an injury and is not unwell then there is no need to retire him if he still enjoys being hacked out or ridden lightly. Its impossible to guage. A 6 year old can be ready for the scrap and heap and due for retirement, so age does not always come into it. You would hope that the owner is empathic and respectful enough to be able to judge whether the horse should be retired or not, after all she knows him better than anyone and what he is or isn't capable of. You would also hope that money doesn't come into it, but in these hard times, who knows. I've heard so many stories of horses being retired because their owners thought that when they reached a certain age it would be 'kinder' to them. I remember an old pony who was 34 and had been in the riding school for the past 20 years. He was a kind gentle horse and everyone wanted to ride him, they loved him so much. One day, for no reason, the riding school decided to retire him, so they marched him off down the lane and shoved him into a field on his own. The next day they were amazed to find the horse had jumped over the gate and trotted back up the road and was waiting outside his old stable to be let in for his breakfast. So they took him back down the lane and shoved him in the same field on his own, when all his life he'd been surrounded by loving people who had ridden him, stroked him and loved him and all his friends who he'd been turned out with in the field. And guess what.... next morning he was back outside his stable waiting for his breakfast. So do you know what the riding school did?? Rather than try to find him company with another horse(s) or bring him back into very light ridden work (if they didn't feel he was capable of anything too strenous) they had him shot.

. This is a true story and this was at the riding stables where I used to work weekends and learnt to ride for a period of about 7 years. Discraceful after he had served them so well for so long and made them so much money.

Totally agree... My Girl is FAR rom being retired, and she is 21. As long as you manage them well and are not silly in what you ask them to do, they will continue to be fit and healthy.

This boy dosnt need to be passed onto a charity x
 
Bit sad she's only had him for 6months, I always like to think of oldies have a nice stable life once their golden days are past.
 
I think from the photo he looks older than 19 but it could just be a bad pic! My old PC horse was 27 and we still went out doing clear rounds and fun shows then so I think it is best for many older horses to keep going.
 
dont be so quick to judge my boy is 28 he does not look as goodas he did 10 years ago but he still gets ridden most evenings in the summer and the wekend in the winter, and he still does a couple of xc shows a year, and i will continue to ride him untill he tells me he does not want to do it
 
I think apart from the bad pic- which is in winter and isn't recent he looks fine for a clipped older horse. Most older horses are quite happy to be out there doing things not just hacking about anyway and they are generally fab, they might have to jump a notch lower but I have known several 25+ on the local unaff circuit who love being out still and often teaching their more novice riders the ropes.- oh and generally bloody win everything!

He def doesn't need retiring, I find that a bit bizarre tbh. Particularly as I fully intend to keep mine in work and competing so long as he is sound.

edited to add- assume pic is winter, he is clipped, yard is wet (yes I know that they all are atm! and the quality of light in the pic)

Poor soul, i've just zoomed the picture up to see what was going on with his bridle. They have taken the reins over his head, with martingale on, and tied him up with his reins bless him

IMO i think with some love and tlc you could bring this chap back to life, and he would enjoy a life of happy hacking with someone, if i was looking i'd defo go see.

For all anyone knows there could be nothing wrong the horse, ok he's one of those sorry looking types, possibly just having a snooze and yeah in need of a bit of a brush etc, but far from a charity case

I think he looks tired in that particular photograph but it may just be that photo isn't a great representation of him.

If I was looking for my first horse now I would be calling about him for definite. He would be a lovely horse for me to potter about on as a lovely hack for the rest of his ridden life.
 
And who is to know what went on before this photo - he could have just got back from a three hour fast hack or done a days lessons etc.

I think this horse has oodles to offer, what a star!
 
Is this for real???

That horse is 3 years younger than the grey in my sig- who is still active and ridden regularly. He gets tired if I ride him every day...so obviously I dont...3-4 times a week and he's good for a fast/lively hack, bit of school or jumping.

Older horses have alot to offer...do you REALLY think a charity would be interested in a fit/healthy/active 19 yo old horse.....simply cos it is 19?

Just because a horse is older doesn't mean it's finished! You cannot base an opinion like that due to one photo

Yes, it is a bad picture but with the correct management there is no reason a horse of his age (or older in fact) should not go on and enjoy a good life.

The photo is crap for a start off but he doesn't look in bad condition, just looks thoroughly bored and fed up!

I can't see any reason why he couldn't be sold on provided is he's sound and doesn't have any degenerative problems etc. Didn't an eventer go around badminton at 18 (I want to say Over To You but prob wrong there!)? A friend of mine has an 18yo competing at top level dressage and I've known plenty of people hunt horses in to their 20's.

Assuming he's sound, it's better for him to go to a nice hacking home (which is what the ad says isn't it?) and still have a useful life than rot away in a charity which could have given the place to a horse really in need.
 
agree with everyone else! Monty is 28 now and he still gets ridden lightly 3 times a week. He is great for teaching people on since he's been around the block.

He has taught my mum to ride in the last 2 years. In fact, if my mum was looking I'd be straight over to see him.......looks like a poppet!
 
I agree with the others, looks like a poor picture of him really. A pony I used to ride was still doing some PC at the grand age of 34! He died in his sleep aged 36, and was still being ridden 2-3 times a week, pootling around hacking.

Maybe the owner doesnt want to sell him off cheap ,but to someone who will value the old chap.I hope he finds a good home,His feet look good,his condition is good,anyway for some horses, retirement is the worst thing .
 
I agree with others here. He looks well put together so probably could keep going for many years (if someone buys him a headcollar). He looks like he's enjoying a bit of sun on his face and a doze is all!
 
No wonder he looks miserable, at 19 years old I can't think for the life of me why he needs all the crap and caboodle tack on him. His poor head is almost tied down and all those horrid gadgets around his face are probably completely unnecessary.
Other than that he looks in good condition body wise and probably still OK for hacking out but at £1500 it would be difficult to sell him on.
 
I'm alarmed that the novice rider bought a 17.2h horse 6months ago knows all of its 19 year history and is now in a position that he needs selling. Personally although it could all be true, i'm a little cynical and think there is more to it??
Agree with all the rest though put him on a simple bridle, feed him, brush him and a bit of tlc and your away! A bit expensive mind, although I would hope that at 19 there would be no one buying him to sell on at that age surely it would be for a happy hacker until the end of his days
