This recent dry weather

Has really effected horses feet, farriers are finding cracks - pulled off shoes- lameness brittle feet.


My boy has always had good horn, yesterday he was shod, later we went to walk him round the roads and he was very footy reluctant to walk on. He also had broken chunks out the bottoms of his feet, now on box rest tonight and bute.

Anyone else hooves suffered by the dry spell???

I had my two shod this week, the pony's feet are no different, but my T.B had started to chip badly on fronts. Farrier said he had seen a lot of it due to recent dry spell. Luckily T.B had enough growth to tidy fronts up.

Yes, my tb has very good feet and goes 6 weeks between shoeing easily normally but in the last 3 weeks he has managed to pull both fronts off and farrier has said we will need to do him every 4 weeks. He also had to have filler in his hind feet. Farrier says nothing wrong with the quality of horn, just the dry ground is really taking it out of them.

My two barefoot ponies are getting a lot of cracks recently, but their feet are growing very quickly so they are being trimmed every 4 weeks at the moment to keep on top of it. I've started using Effol ointment to see if that helps at all.

My barefoot pony is fab at the moment. Dry weather really helps us as it makes his feet harder and a lot more hard wearing so we can do more miles before needing to boot. Not a crack in sight

Funnily enough I've just been having a moan about this tonight.

Got myself all geared up to ride. Took several co-codamol before I set off to yard (gimpy ankle). Got the chap out of the field and he has somehow developed a crack in his back hoof - was fine last night.

Rang my farrier and he wasn't too concerned (he's coming Tues anyway) but this is the surgery foot so it's growing out slightly weird anyway. Anyway I daren't jeapordise this hoof, so no riding and I may even limit his turnout until my farrier has been.

^^^^ Same here. The dry ground is fab for producing nice rock-hard feet, no cracks or chips, and no hoof dressing required. I'm sure it won't be long though before we are back to bog!!
