This rug .... can anyone explain?

If it's anything like the Snuggy Hoods, I would imagine it's intended to have a standard no-neck TO or stable rug over the top of it. So the horse's neck and mane are clean but it doesn't need to wear a rug with a neck. It seems to work well for some people / horses.

That one looks awfully baggy though, I can't really see that working.....

White stockings and mud are not a match made in heaven
I've given up on white stockings until April at least. We have orange stockings now.

I'm in a bit of a dilemma though - mine needs his fuzzles (not quite "feathers" - they're more like fluffy ankles - neither one thing nor t'other) clipping off so the mud doesn't stick so badly, but to do that I need to clean them up enough that I don't murder my trimmers. I'm contemplating washing his legs, then popping each one into a duvet cover and gaffa taping just above the knees. Then I can trim them the next day! What can possibly go wrong.*

*joking, don't panic. But I actually don't have any better ideas yet.

Sorely tempted by a nose to hoof mud proof, hose down onesie in cob right now. The sort of thing mums put toddlers in. White stockings and mud are not a match made in heaven
I understand but those type of things make horses uncomfortable and hot and it’s just more stuff they can tangle up.
Just brace yourself and think of spring .

Pony wellies is what you need. Would go well with my washable onesie.

I'll sort out the range for winter 2024 😁

Previous horse had a fitted lycra suit from nose to tail but not down the legs. Was funny when a vet wanted to do an identity check on the lorry before he was allowed into the showground. She found enough identifying bits.

My sister horse can get any neck rug off expect the swish ones so maybe it’s for something like that as he is the filthiest horse ever and he cakes himself in mud we have a hot shower to help but sometimes it’s too cold to even use that

Its supposed to have a standard neck rug on top as someone above says, it needs to be loose in the neck to allow the horse to stretch down without dragging on the withers or mane. That one does look terribly bulky though as you say. My pony has the Snuggy Hoods version which fits wellView attachment 130631
Nothing to add except to say your pony is beautiful 😍
