I've been using Deosect for years and years, and always rated it highly.

I was gutted last year when I discovered that it was temporarily unavailable (and it later turned out that it was unavailable all summer) just a few days after I'd disposed of the considerable remains of the previous summers bottle, as I avoid using fly/sun protection if it's been open for long.

So last summer was a mix of trial and error with trying different formats/brands of fly protection, with varying degrees of success.

I was thrilled to see Deosect was available again a few months ago, and have been using it as directed - 2.5ml Deosect and 125ml water, used as soon as it is mixed, sponged on to every part of the pony, every two weeks.

I might as well not have bothered though.

Below is Treacle, late morning in her stable, having been Deo'd the previous evening, and Charlotte in her field at 7am, 36 hours after being Deo'd.

I don't recall ever having this many flies on horses whilst using Deosect before. Is this happening to anyone else this summer? Is it different to previous years for you?

I'm not sure what exactly the issue was last year, but might they have changed the formula, and it's less effective now? Or are flies becoming less affected?

Whhhhhhhaaaaaaaa.

Hi having exactly the same problem with Deosect - i dont know whether the flies are immune or the ingredients have changed but i might aswell have sprayed the horses in sugar. It did nothing to detract the flies.

I'm using left over from last year and its doing zero but maybe its too old. I didn't think it helped any more than anything else previously though really hence having half a bottle left over. I dont think any thing seems to be working particularly well. Holding horses this morning in the field for the farrier was hideous.

Deosect isn’t a fly repellant, it acts to kill the flies but it doesn’t work immediately- if they land on the horse they absorb some and they die later if they have received a sufficient dose.
It’s good to use as overall fly control, but it doesn’t stop the flies landing on them

I tried it this spring but one of my horses had a reaction and it didn’t seem any more effective than most fly sprays. I’m currently using Hedge Witch and got to say I’m quite impressed!
