This will move the hardest of hearts..

You only have to have a mare and baby to know what horses are capable of. And while we can never attach human emotions to horses, or risk being called a moron who knows nothing, they go to extraordinary lengths for their foals. Not all. Having witnessed what my mare went through after her foal had to be put down after a pasture accident, I beg to differ.

It's also why I prefer mares to geldings or stallions. Neither of which will give you what a good mare has to give. I had some visitors the other day who were like, OMG you have 4 mares(only one broodie before I get hammered). I'm like yup, wouldn't have it any other way.

And broodmares, they are amazing. That's why my girl will be for me for the rest of her life and she may not ever have another foal.

What a wonderful story and the photos on Facebook of them enjoying time in the field are wonderful.

Agree about mares. Love my geldings but my mare is streets above them in devotion stakes.

I would always choose mares, they have a strength lacking in geldings which is probably why many people can't cope with them ;)
Most horses would have been throwing themselves around trying to escape, but she must have stayed so still to shield her baby.

I once worked with a horse that had been trapped in a stable that someone deliberately set fire to. He managed to jump out over the door, but his burns were life threatening and he was in intensive care at Liphook a long time. Now, many years later he lives a relatively normal life, though he is almost completely bald down one side.
