Hi all,

Quick question, I have a 23yrd mare who had a touch of lami this spring, ever since I have been soaking her hay (last years batch) for 12 hours before I give it to her, I ordered some more hay this morning and the farm owner gave me a bale from his new batch ( this years) its quite green still. I not sure if this is a numpty question would it be ok for her to have this, I will soak it for 12 hours or am I best to ask the farmer for the last of the old stuff. I don't want to trigger another lami attack

Thanks

You need to check when it was baled. It should be left for MINIMUM 6 Weeks before feeding, we try for 3 months before selling this years hay or haylage, with a self-implemented limit of 2 months old.

To answer your question. No its not OK to feed your ex laminitic new hay....please try to buy some old for her at least until the new stuff is much older...say 3 months. You are asking for trouble soaked or dry.

Thanks I thought as much. This is my first dealings with a lami pony and ob want to do the right thing. I will exchange it for the old hay.

I would not risk it. I always feed my lad year old hay and I had some from a different supplier that was a year old but you could tell it was better quality and more stalky by the smell and look of it. I put him on this when I ran out from my usual supplier and even though it was soaked as normal and a year old he was cresty looking within the week! So I have to give him the odd pad every few days now mixed in with his usual hay and he is fine.
