Does anyone have a thoroughbred cross native..Im covering my native mare with a tb stallion this year and just wondered what they are like.she is a coloured native type and i think a tb would be a great cross..any pics would be good too....

What 'native' is your mare? I have a connemara x TB and have had him since a 4yo (he's 21 this year!). He's been a brilliant horse to be honest - bit of a character but basically has turned his hoof to all sorts. He was originally bought as a showjumper and did well as a youngster but then we went bit stale.

He has since decided that he likes eventing (although I am a chicken so onlt brave enough to do smallish stuff! Lol)

All in all I think native x TB s are great crosses - you get the native/poy intelligence mixed with a bit more of the TB athleticism. I can't post pics as at work but mine is a 16hh golden dun gelding and I'd say medium weight.

she's a 15hh native mare with not too much feather id say she was a mediumweight as she isnt too heavy..she has irish draught and welsh cob in her breeding so i think she'd cross well with a tb...

I have a New Forest X Thoroughbred.
She has an amazing pop on her, very intelligent (maybe a bit too clever!), quite a good doer, very fast and fizzy but also has the stubbornness / naughtiness of a little native pony :p She's quite fine and small.
I'll upload a picture later when I'm home.

So she's not really a native breed but a cross

'Pure' bred horses are generally good for crossbreds as you have a better idea of what you are going to get, you will definitely be adding blood to the mix! Are you planning on keeping the foal?

Sounds to me like you are onto a winner. Welsh x TB is a good if sometimes quirky mix and IDxTB is the ISH which to me is the best cross. So hopefully you'll get something nice. But why breed? why not buy?

To breed your own foal to know it from day one and bond and develop it from such an age is so so special. Money can't buy such a thing.

I would never have chosen to breed, my filly was a bogof but she is so so special. Why wouldn't I have chosen to breed? because I don't have the finacial means nor the facilities but for those who do who are breeding for themselves it totally makes sense to me.

I have always bought horses before and you get other peoples problems. Horses bred at studs don't get the individual handling and those born at home rarely come up for sale. My filly is everything I could want and more and any quirks or problems we deal with there and then with no baggage :D

I have had TB x Connie excellent little PC / RC eventer, TB x unknown native very capeable and quick thinking now slightly off subject Arab x Cob and her daughter who's dad is an unknown but thought to be hunter / warmblood type.

..... Horses bred at studs don't get the individual handling and those born at home rarely come up for sale. ...

I disagree with this.

Surely it depends on the stud? I worked on one stud and the foals were regularly handled each and much more of a delight to work with than some private horses that I've had to deal with.

Some of the most spoilt and difficult are the homebred, individually handled youngsters. It all depends on the handling they receive and at studs they will have the benefit of experienced people and being able to live in herds usually, which means they are well socialised.

This is my TB X cob. She's only 20 months so still growing. This is her at 15 months

Yes she is a cross not a purebred mare hence the reason for using a thoroughbred on her.She is currently in foal to a nice stallion so isnt our first time..im well aware of what im doing iv worked with youngsters/stallions/mares sinse i was a teenager and have plenty of experience..i keep my mare at a stud have exellent facilities and have enough acerage to run them on..foal will be for keeps...

mine is a TB x welsh had her since she was 8 she is 27 this year  she's an excellent doer she was quick and had a fantastic pop in her but godness me she is probably the most bloody minded animal I have ever owned not sure whether that is her breeding or maybe that she is a chestnut?? :D

Tb x Connies are gods own cross!! I've met some mad ones but never a bad one :D

I took the risk and bred crossbred to crossbred- I was just lucky I got a good'un and quit while I was ahead- mine's for keeps too :D

Tb x Connie- rip little girl...

As long as you're breeding something that holds a good Market value if your plans go totally wrong (I know it's happened to me in the past) I don't see a problem- then again I'm biased ;)

I have a tb x gypsy cob, a tb x nf and a tb x Arab/Welsh. They are a real mix of characters the native stereotypes in all of them have come out more strongly than the tb side.

I have had two native X TB and won't have anything else now!!:) Both times the stallion was TB and Native mother.

Please see previous HHO posts below for pics of mine.

Turns his hoof to anything and is a brilliant all rounder but given an inch and will take a mile as it's just the native cheekiness!!He tries his heart out at anything you ask of him and is very brave and never sick or sorry. His only downfall is his stomach as he would like to tell everyone he is starved constantly as is the ultimate good doer!!

I say go for it and keep us updated!! :D

I have a Highland x TB. He is good in traffic. He jumps well, if only I had a young jockey to compete him. He is only 14.2hh and looks like a refined Highland. He rides bigger than he looks. You can ride him on the buckle or rev him up for a manic ride across country. We have also competed low level dressage (could have gone a lot further with a different rider) and rarely come home without a rosette.

The original offroader!!!

I have a TB x Connie, 6 years old 14.2. He is fantastic - has the native hardiness but is also quite refined in confirmation. He is not a nutter at all and has a big natural jump. He is my pride and joy :D
