I've been told that if I'm wanting to do BSJA, I shouldn't have bought a TB X.

My last horse was a TB X, and whilst we had lots of fun SJ, he never excelled.

Are warmbloods just better at jumping by default? I'm only looking to do the BN and similar classes with mine. Unfortunately I buy horses for looks and temperment, and assume good schooling and lessons will help for lower levels BSJA.

Can TB's jump, and win?

Hell yeah

My TB was a winning machine up to 1.10m!

There are enough examples to prove that comment wrong, & I am sure many of us have known a fair few TB's & their crosses who compete at lower levels of BSJA. It's like saying Arabs dont like water, it's a flippant comment with no basis on truth.

My TB would have jumped you if you were infront of him. We came home with rosettes every time out - to say he excelled at jumping would be very accurate.

X

Course they can jump!

Most warmbloods have lots of thoroughbred blood, and thats really what a warmblood is - a hot blood like a tb or an arab crossed with heavier cold blooded horses.

Not all thoroughbreds or tb crosses will excel at jumping, but plenty of them will - there are numerous horses at the top of sports like eventing and showjumping that have a lot of thoroughbred blood.

Absolute twaddle, of course they can.

Someone is pulling your chain.

Any horse can, some just have more talent, physical ability and inclination to do so than others, that's all.

Grand National? Gold Cup? Pardubice? Maryland Hunt Cup?
David Broomes' Philco was a racehorse, dozens of other examples.

Sorry Spiral, hit QR, was replying to OP.

Dito that, my t/b jumps anything put in her way....
bold as well as brave

Of coure they can jump - what about the ex-racehorses that go into eventing? TBxs probably have the best of both worlds, with the power to jump and the speed to win a jump off.

Honestly, next someone will claim you need a warmblood to ride a prelim dressage test

Ditto All! The person who told you that obviously dosen't know what they are talking about! Top Class eventers tend to like at least 7/8ths TB in their horses (so I've read). WBs can be too slow (so I've been told!!!)

Can't jump - how big is The Chair at Aintree?

Says it all really!!!!

My ex race jumped five bar gates from a stand still - just could she could.

And the one in my sig (although 1/4 dutch WB) will jump anything you point her at height wise (aslong as its not white!?!?!

The grey in my sig is a TB x and he's won over £850 BSJA so far. He's won numerous classes

He also is successful at Novice BE too. Id easily buy a TB x or pure TB for jumping. Having had a warmblood, I would not buy one again lets say!

Of COURSE TB's can jump - and some of them can jump rather well! Best horse I ever had was an ex-hurdle racer. He was too slow over hurdles and would have gone 'chasing but broke down.

I bought him to event but the bu**er was terrifyingly uncontrollable on the xc! (His dressage was abysmal too!) SO I started showjumping him! Over D&C Grade fences he jumed clear round after clear round, but couldn't win against the clock (couldn't make the turns like the 15 hh seed freaks!) So we started juming him in Oen classes and the first class he won was a Puissance over 6'8"! He only did a coule more Puissances after that as it was just TOO terrifying to be heading at a 7' wall in flat-out gallop!

He went on to become the top showjumer of his day in Australia (ridden by my then trainer - bloody fences were too big for me!) and was sold for lots of dosh to Ferdi Tyteca for the '76 Olympics (although he didn't get there due to injury!)

And there's not much to beat a good ID Sport horse for jumping AND a brain (which is always useful!)

I will stand corrected if I am wrong, but I am sure that Shutterfuly is more than 3/4 TB ......

I was just thinking that! Also, I may be going completely mad, but wasn't Gem Twist a TB?

My boy is Irish TB and he's jumped foxhunters, and as many above have said racing fences are huge - even P2P fences are 4'6" which I wouldn't fancy on something that "couldn't jump"! Yes they can be scatty (I had an unscheduled dismount from mine in a jump off yesterday when we had a difference of opinion on which line we were taking in an option of two gaps lol) but they're usually quick and careful. I went horse shopping looking for a big boned Irish Draught type but I'd always look at a TB now!

My first horse (as opposed to pony) was an ex-flat racer...he'd actually won a couple of graded races too so was no 'failure'...was pretty much unbeatable against the clock. He was only 15.3hh and among other things he was the National Schools Individual Champion in 1982 with his previous owner. He also jumped Foxhunter Regional Finals and qualified for both the summer and winter national grade C finals (which would have been upto about 1.35m/1.40m) with me

Here he is :-

He was certainly not a classic ride...and he wouldn't be my first choice of a horse to jump nowadays...but they certainly can do it...or at least some of them can.

The desire for WB's these days stems from the increased technicality of the tracks (not really relevant at BN or Disco) and the fact that they are bred for the job so a better chance of finding a good'un

Lionel (Hickstead Derby, Puissance) Philco (too many to mention) Psalm (Olympics), Lucky Strike (ex show hack and int. show jumper) Seahawk (as before) O'Malley (Harvey never complained) and anything that has won the Grand National and or The Cheltenham Gold Cup.
