I think that my horse has thoroughpin, or it sounds like it. She has swelling around the hock and the rest of the symptoms of thoroughpin. She is not lame, just a little short in the leg i have turned her out as dont believe in box rest for this kind of thing i am thinking of hacking her out for 20 mins just walking is this a wise idea

A thoroughpin is a swelling in the fleshy bit above the point of the hock/in front of the tendon, its usually a very round bump and doesn't usually cause lameness. If your horses whole hock is swollen it is more likely to be a spavin, bulging on the front is a bog spavin and not much to see for a bone spavin but the bone spavins can cause problems/lameness until they fuse.
I wouldn't exercise her until you know what is actually wrong, all the above are caused by some kind of strain.

My old mare had thoroughpins from the age of 4 and 'thick' hocks. She then got bog spavins in her late teens. Was never lame on them though.

Throughpin is caused by concussion/over working on hard ground. It is a small circluar swelling on the outiside of the leg about 5cm in from the point of the hock. Is this where the swelling is on your horse? Otherwise it's possible it could be a kick or a knock. There can be some lameness when the throughpin first appears but after a few days horse should be sound. Cold hosing and polticing helps. Once formed a thorogpin doesn't usually cause an issue.

Whatever she's done don't ride her unless shes sound or the vets been and recommends riding him. Give it 3 or 4 days ice packing it etc then reassess. I would keep her in a smallish paddock on her own until she comes right
