Does anyone have any info/ advice for a horse with Thoroughpins..? Do they cause much trouble/ how should they be treated?

I've read up about it on the internet but although it says that they are more of a blemish, it also says that it is a swelling of the tendon sheath around the deep digital flexor tendon...which sounds altogether more serious..!

Any info greatfully received..!

My 10yo Arab developed a t/pin about 2 years ago from ski-ing downhill (!). It wasn't very swollen and he wasn't lame with it. Scans showed nothing to worry about underneath, and the advice was to either leave well alone, or to have a steroid injection. As the injection carries with it a slight risk of infection, I chose to go down the 'leave well alone' route, and since then it has given no trouble at all and is barely noticeable.

The fact that subsequently he did tear his DDFT at the fetlock is apparently a coincidence ...

I had a horse who had these - they appeared after he increased his work load and went eventing. We tried various topical applications but they didnt seem to help much. After a month off at grass they had gone so i decided to change his career and he now has a lovely life as a happy hacker. They didnt seem to bother him at all but I guess it was a sign that his joints were under stress.
