I bought Freddie a used (but don't think it has been) Thorowgood t4 cob saddle (square cantle) Now it had the black medium width gullet in, and have borrowed the silver one, so now its on the widest, have saddler fitter coming out on Monday so can ask her these questions then, but am impatient!

How do I know I haven't bought the jump saddle and not the cob saddle as both have square cantle, I have also noticed this saddle has knee and thigh blocks, does the cob saddle have thigh blocks?

The flaps don't look forward cut!

There's usually a tag attaches when the sweat flap joins the panel.

The cob has a VERY wide head and distance between the panels at the front. They also have a point strap a
and a ring for a balancing strap, which I don't think the jump has.

Pictures would help.

Hi, the later Thorowgood Cob saddle does not have thigh blocks, but if it is the jump model, it would have forward cut flaps.
There are 8 gullet bars in the set for the square cantle saddles.

As the saddle is secondhand, are the bolts under the head undone with a screw driver or allen key, as all the later ones are allen key, and does it have the fish system as some older ones had both the fish and changable gullet bars, if it is an older model (over 5 years old) it possibly may have thigh blocks and still be a cob, I have been selling these for the last 7 years.

The cob GP panels/saddle flaps are more like a VSD saddle, ie not quite as straight as a dressage saddle, to ensure the panels sit behind the shoulder and don't restrict the horses movement. Cobs often have large or heavy shoulders that can't take a forward cut panel.

A jumping saddle will be forward cut in the panels/saddle flaps to accommodate the riders legs with the stirrups up short. You really can't jump very high without putting the stirrups up short.

I also bought a second hand t4 cob saddle recently and have the saddler coming out soon!

Mine is definitely a gp and has Velcro under the flaps to attach blocks too. It is visibly straighter cut for big shoulders and has 4 points for girth straps. It has screws not Allen key so must be older.

I bought the xxw gullet and still not sure whether it is wide enough for my tank of a cob :( will have to wait and see what saddler says. Also being impatient!

I have a t4 cob saddle that has knee and thigh blocks, they are close contact and square cantle, can you post pic as my saddler has fitted mine so def a cob gp.. ill be able to tell you if same style.. mines changeable gullet and had fish inserts :)

I have a T4 cob (definitely a T4 cob as checked serial number with TG) and has thigh blocks.

If yours has the serial number still visible you could try this to confirm, just email TG and ask, they very helpful usually:)

The older models (2009 and earlier) had thigh blocks, the flathead screws under the pommel for changing the gullet and slightly different layout/way of attaching on the girth straps.

Other than that they are pretty much the same as the newer ones, from what i can see anyway (I have a newer model as well).

I actually changed the screws over to the allen key ones on my older saddle, inside and out.Sent TG an e mail asking where could purchase them and they sent me some free of charge:),does make changing the gullet slightly easier and looks less dated.

Thanks guys, I have the normal screws inside, so must be the older model!! I will post some photos, I have it on the widest setting, no idea if it will fit the gert lardy bum! geez and he's only 2.5 yrs old.... I have a monster!

Bless! :D Don't worry too much, blackpony started off in a white gullet (xw) & is now in a blue (medium/wide) & with work will probs go down to black (medium) You'll be surprised how quick tubsters thin up with some work :D
