Yes, another saddle post!
My saddler has just left me with two options - either pad my Wintec 2000 GP up with a Prolite or sheepskin (prolite makes it too narrow along the gullet though), or get a new saddle like a Thorowgood that has "taller" panels than the Wintec. I have a list of pros and cons for each option so I need some opinions on the Thorowgoods! My only experience of them was an old Maxam at the riding school I used to ride at when I was little... it was HORRIBLE, very scratchy (felt like it would wear the bottom off my jods!) and rather uncomfortable. It put me right off the Thorowgoods but I am hoping you HHOers can enlighten me on how much they have changed and improved in the last 10-15 years?!

Love them

One RS pony has a T4,only issue is that it feels like sitting on a sponge when wet

but that wouldnt be a problem without the fabric seat.
Very comfy, looks good and lasts well.
The FISH has been a godsend with the pony,2 sets in and fits her like a glove, saved buying 2 new saddles as she grew and changed.

ETA,the old ones were really awfull werent they?
Hated them 10 years ago,but the new ones are a real alternative to leather.

I’m also a fan after recently getting a T4 Cob for Bodey (we had to go XXW and the cob design seems to suit him very well). Mine is really comfy. Just have the GP at the mo (done dressage and jumping in it) but will get the dressage when I have a bit more money. I say try it!

I should add, I like my Wintec 2000 because of its EquiSuede seat so I would be getting a T4 rather than a T6. Unless I go mad and get an Ideal because they are so comfy but twice the price, and fixed!
Hmmmm, food for thought!

I LOVE my dressage one

I have a T6 for Pickle

lovely saddles, far nicer than wintecs (know from experience as also ride horses with Wintec's)
Also look really smart, took me a while to convince some people it wasn't leather!

This is mine

I have a T4 dressage saddle (after spending a lifetime saying I would NEVER have a synthetic

) and I love it! Really, really impressed by the quality and it is sooo comfy!

LMAO!
I really did think they had put TG girth guards on a leather for a bit

They are very smart.

I have the T4 cob, the T4 high wither and a griffen gp and i LOVE them all! go thorowgood!!! i used t have wintec n got rid for t4 high wither! i love the suede seat, helped me stay on mor than once!

Get a Thorowgood, they really are good and so so comfy. They are quite different to the old models they used to make.

Also, if you are looking at another option that will make your saddle too tight, you will be looking at future problems, and I am surprised any saddle fitter would even suggest it.

Ted had a Thorowgood T4 and I can not rate them enough. It was beautiful to ride in, comfortable and so light weight. Good clearence over the withers because of his huge withers.

I intend to get a thorowgood dressage saddle for Cato, and going off how she jumped yesterday, and if the saddlefitter thinks her saddle is not good enough, then I think i will be getting a GP too =o)

He thought the Prolite might fit. He didn't have any "normal" Prolites in his van, and mine was at home, so he couldn't put one on to see. He certainly wouldn't have approved of it if he had seen it! I trust my saddler very much, he is bloomin' fab

Thanks everyone, I have been looking at sheepskin pads and TBH it's going to cost me a lot to buy one... not worth it against selling my Wintec and getting a Thorowgood! I will have a good think over the next few days but I think I will be calling my saddler back out so he can put some Thorowgoods on her and we can have a look

Sil, I really cant rate them enough. They really are lovely saddles, The one I had for Ted was the only saddle that woul dfit him because of his shape. Its beautiful to look at and an improvement in his way of going was instant.

Good luck in finding a saddle HUN.

Can I ask those with these saddles what the girth straps are like pls? Are they easy to do up the girth? The last synthetic (Wintec) I used, I found it hard to girth up...the girth buckles just didn't seem to glide over the straps easily.

The girth straps are very much leather, not sure if its real leather but it feels very similar, they are very supple and dont slip, (unless Ned goes HUFMPH!) Theyare also set to be used in a 'no slip' fourth girth strap.

I used to have a thorowgood and loved it, had both an expensive one and a maxam.
The maxam's do feel alot cheaper than the nicer models, but don't be put off by the maxam, there is quite a difference in my opinion

I had the T4 standard and swopped it for the T6 cob and have to say they are both really nice saddles. The cob has a straighter tree and the T6 has leather girth straps. Love the fact that its changeable for his weight changes either with the fish or with the gullet.

I have the T4 dressage hi wither, it fits him nicely being quite straight in his back and very high withers, its so comfy and smart too, nothing like the old maxams

heres my synthetic one
